Hello Friends!

We had a great trip to the Purina Dealer Retail Expo last week in San Antonio. We actually took the Better Horses Radio Road Show to this event and it proved to be a huge hit. While down in San Antonio, we had the opportunity to spend some time at four time World Champion Charro, Jerry Diaz’s ranch. Getting to spend some time with this legend and his family along with meeting his parents was a highlight of the trip.

This week we are still taking off for Marietta, Oklahoma to attend the Open House at NRHA legend, Bob Loomis’s ranch. We are leaving Ottawa, KS on Thursday morning, August 13th, and attending the Purina VIP Day on Friday, Aug.14th. The flyer is inside this letter or you can contact me at 785/418-6047 or e-mail me at ernest_rodina@purina-mills.com . This will be a fun trip.

The American Royal & Purina Unbelievable Horses Happening is going to be a great event this year. Make sure you plan to attend and participate this Oct.22-25th in Kansas City. Don’t forget this will be our first year for the American Royal’s Equine and Ranch Expo held during the same time in the Governors Building. If you have a business that would fit this Expo, make sure you give either me or Pat Mead a call. Pat’s number at the American Royal is 816/221-9800. During this weekend you have going on, The Unbelievable Horse Happening, AR Equine & Ranch Expo, Youth Rodeo Finals, and the American Royal PRCA Rodeo. Mark your calendars to be there on Oct. 22nd thru Oct.25th!

We are in the process of putting together the Better Horses Network Fall Edition. This edition will feature the American Royal. Our deadline is August 16th. Call me or e-mail me at ernest_rodina@purina-mills.com to place an ad.

Horse Management Tip

                                  Hauling Your Horse

When hauling a horse to a new facility, remember that he needs
ample time to adjust to his new surroundings before you can ask
as much as usual. Take with you everything familiar to him that
you can -- the same blanket, feed, and other things he’s used to.

Remember whenever you bring a new horse to a facility, he
should be quarantined for at least a week before the other horses
are exposed to him. This is a good step toward preventing the
spread of a contagious disease throughout the barn.

Horsey Treat Recipe

Want to teach that little foal to eat out of your hand?
     Try this special treat . . .

Foal Treats

Mash an apple or puree a carrot (or combine together)
Add 1 tablespoon molasses
Mix thoroughly
While someone holds the foal, use your fingers to rub the mixture on its lips and gums.  Soon the foal will literally be eating out of your hand!

Thoughts To Ponder

                       By Charley Green

                                          Humility

Shucks, I was just an old cowhand that had a little luck.
Why all this here fuss about me?
                                                                                       - Will Rogers

Sometimes humility can show up in different ways in our lives.  For
instance, there was a time I thought I'd make a good salesman and be
richly rewarded for my efforts.  Between my freshman and sophomore
year in college, I was "sold" into selling crystal, china, cookware and
silver to young brides-to-be and wanta-be's to add to their hope chest.

Now I know an opportunity when I see it and realized this would be a
great way to meet young ladies and pay for college at the same time, or
so my thinking went.  When I told my brother, Hank, what I was going
to do that summer, he said:

"You're wasting your time, 'cause you can't sell anything!"

The way the summer turned out, I proved him wrong (well, sort of)
as I wound up selling my stereo, my TV and my car to meet expenses.

. . . Didn't meet the girl of my dreams either.

Occasionally, we have to step in it to learn the lesson.
