Volume 4, Number 11
Hello, Friends!
I apologize for being a week late in getting this to you, but it seems like we have a lot going on. The Shawn Flarida and Brent Wright reining clinic was a huge success. I want to thank Fred and Susan Bershauer and the Eby Ranch for letting us put it on at their beautiful facility.
We had a great time at the Old West Cowboy Days First Annual Trail Ride this past weekend. The ride, food, and entertainment were just tremendous. Cowboy poet, Geff Dawson, and cowboy singer, J Parson entertained the group on Saturday evening and did a super job.
If any of you are around Topeka this weekend, you might want to stop in at the Kansas ExpoCentre and watch the Kansas High School Rodeo State Finals. The performances run Friday through Sunday. Stop by the Purina booth and look us up.
The Buck Creek/Lonesome Pine Ranch Rodeo Team has invited folks to join them for a day of driving a herd of cattle to another pasture in the Flint Hills. On Wednesday, June 18th, you would have the opportunity to work beside one of the best Ranch Rodeo Teams driving and working cattle in the beautiful Flint Hills at the W Bar Ranch near Matfield Green, Ks.. You could drive in on Tuesday evening, June 17th, and join us for a reception at the Grand Central Hotel in Cottonwood Falls, Ks.. Breakfast, Lunch, and Supper along with entertainment will be provided and served on the 18th. The cost for this great experience and clinic is $225/rider and is limited to 15 riders. For reservations call me at 785/418-6047 or Randy Peterson at 620/341-2855. It is going to be a great time.
Don’t forget the Extreme Cowboy Race at the Saddle and Sirloin Club in Kansas City on Friday, June 20th thru Sunday, June 22nd. On Saturday after the race they are having a Special Ranch Horse Sale with only the horses in the race being in the sale. Along with this great event you will be entertained by the Great Cowboy Singer, RW Hampton. Information is inside this newsletter. BONUS! Priefert will be selling 125 Premier 12 foot BRAND NEW panels immediately after the event on Sunday. These normally sell for $115/panel and THEY WILL BE ON SALE FOR $90/PANEL! Already they have 20 panels spoken for. The remaining 105 panels will be sold on a first come first serve basis. To reserve some panels to purchase, you can call Bill Hull at 913/208-6381. I hope to see you at this great event!
With prices as high as they are on everything, it is important to be as efficient as possible with taking care of our horses. Purina Feeds are still the most efficient way to feed a horse a balanced diet. When you look at cost/head/day and what type of nutrition Strategy® delivers to horse’s performance, it is the way to go. If you have any horses with any special issues, Purina’s WellSolve Diets are now available. Let me know if we can be of any help to you and your horse operation. I hope to see you around.
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
Don’t Be In A Hurry
By Ernie Rodina
As you are coming back into camp after being out on the trail, don’t be in a
hurry to get back to unsaddle. Never run back to camp, as the horse will begin
to anticipate that as a time when the ride will be over. It will get to the
point that you will be fighting your horse to hold him back from getting to back
to camp.
A good habit is to take your time before unsaddling your horse after a ride.
Once you get back to the camp, ride around for awhile and possibly circle back a
ways before unsaddling. By doing this, you will help your horse from getting
anxious and from anticipating that going back to camp is a reward.
Horsey Treat Recipe
Horse & Dog Cookies
1-1/2 pint (or 500 ml) of molasses
1 jar of applesauce
1/2 c. of corn or vegetable oil
8 c. of large flake oatmeal
4 c. of bran (horse bran or from the cereal aisle in the grocery store, or use a
bran cereal)
1/2 c. of salt
1-1/2 tblsp. of baking soda
2 lbs. shredded carrots
10 c. of whole wheat flour
Preheat oven to 350oF. Mix all together and check for "cookie"
consistency in the dough. Grease cookie sheets (with molasses in the
recipe, this is really important!). Drop by large, horse-sized spoonfuls
onto the cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes. Air out the house
because it will smell like molasses!
