Hello Friends!

I hope all is going well with all of you. I am right in the middle of our Purina HOW meetings which are our Horse Owner Workshops. While I am writing this to you, I am with Purina Ambassador, Kerry Kuhn, doing a workshop in Salina, KS at the Farm Show. On a Tuesday afternoon, having over 100 interested horsemen watching, is proof that folks really enjoy learning more about horses more than ever.

On Thursday, March 26^th, we kick off our Curt and Tammy Pate HOW tour at the Rocking V Ranch located south of Topeka, Kansas. This coming weekend Curt and Tammy will be doing a 2-Day clinic at the Lone Wolf Arena located at 22801 State Line Road in Kansas City. This will be an excellent opportunity to ride with Curt and Tammy. Curt will be spending quite a bit of time working on Effective Stockmanship, and Tammy will will be working with the women riders on Horsemanship. Make sure you come out on Friday, the 27^th, for a demonstration put on for the public. The riding clinic with Curt and Tammy will be held on Saturday and Sunday. You will want to stick around Saturday night after the first day of clinics -- we will be serving complimentary hamburgers, along with the opportunity to enjoy the Open House for the new Lone Wolf Arena facility. Make sure you plan to join us on the 2^nd Annual Dream Ride In The Flint Hills this May 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd. We will be at the beautiful Flying W Ranch for a weekend of great riding and fellowship. Come join us, you will not be disappointed. Information is inside.

Our 2^nd Annual Million Dollar Reining Clinic will be held this May 29^th, 30^th, & 31^st at the Kansas ExpoCentre in Topeka. You will have the opportunity to learn from two of the best with Brent Wright and Dell Hendricks. Friday night will be a special HOW event for the public. We will be having a Jackpot Reining featuring 20 riders. These riders will run their patterns and be judged by Brent and Dell. After their run, Brent and Dell will critique the runs to the audience. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about the exciting sport of reining. Clinic participants will have the first option to participate in the Jackpot. If the class is not filled, we will be taking outside entries. You won’t want to miss the Saturday night festivities with a great steak, good music, and good friends.

Our prayers go out to Justin Robinson, our Purina Dealer in Bennington, KS.  Justin was in a serious horse accident about a week ago. He suffered some real bad injuries but is expected to have a full recovery. Get well, Justin!

My hero has to be Joe Works, the founder and owner of B&W Hitch in Humboldt, KS.  If you have an opportunity you need to click on the link that follows to see what he did for his community. With their business going through some setbacks with the economy, rather than lay folks off, he paid them full time and had them work on community projects. Charlie and Pat are now living in west Texas near Seymour and have purchased a small ranch, which is perfect for training their cattle dogs.  They have a nice group of Hangin Tree Cowdogs.

Person in Kansas Has a Good Home and Looking for A Horse

Horse Hay Available

If you are looking for horse hay, the McKinnis farm has a semi load of good brome for sale, 2008 crop.  The bales are 3x3x8 and weigh approximately 800-850 lbs.  Asking $80/ton.  Would like to get it moved out of the barn before the end of May when it is time to bale again.  If interested, please call Joe Warren (620) 756-4870.

Horse Management Tip

Relationship With Your Horse

Another great tip taken from Al Dunning’s new book, The Ultimate Level Of Horsemanship   (www.aldunning.com)

I want to talk to you about your relationship with your horse. If you go to the extreme in making your horse a pet, it is not going to help develop the right relationship with your horse and with you as its trainer. If your horse is treated as an equal, it is going to be difficult to teach your horse anything. It is like trying to have an equal relationship with your child. You might have a good time for awhile, but you will not get the respect of your child. At the same time just as you wouldn’t want to frighten your child, you will not want to frighten your horse either.

Being cruel or mean to your horse and demanding respect are two completely different procedures.  If you demand respect from your horses, they are going to be a lot more fun to be around and safer, too. Horses are a wonderful gift from God for us to enjoy. Getting hurt or struggling to get along with our horses takes the fun right out of them.

Horsey Treat Recipe

Lone Ranger Horse Cookies

Ingredients:
1 cup sweet feed
2 cups bran
1 cup flax seed
4 large carrots, shredded
1 cup molasses
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup applesauce

Preheat oven to 300^o F.  Mix molasses, brown sugar, carrots and applesauce in one bowl.  In another bowl, mix the dry ingredients.  Slowly combine the molasses mixture with the dry ingredients.  Add only enough molasses mixture to form a thick dough (add more bran if necessary).  Line cookie sheet with aluminum foil.  Using a tablespoon, drop batter onto cookie
sheet and flatten slightly to form portions about the size of a silver dollar.  Bake at 300^o for about 1 hour.  Flip and bake for an additional 45 minutes until they are dried out.  (Keep
checking to make sure they don't burn.)

                                                    Use as a special treat for your favorite horse!

Gambling    Now, I'm not opposed to occasionally stepping up to a casino    crap table and rolling the dice, looking for a 7 or 11 on the first    toss.  (In life, we also have to step up to the table.)  However, I    know what happens when folks go to the tables too often without    understanding the odds of the house.  (And we all know what    happens when we belly up to the kitchen table more than we    should!)
