Volume 5, Number 3
Hello Friends!
I apologize for being a week late, but with attending a sales expo and getting ready for our first HOW Event this past weekend, time got away from me. WOW! What a great Horseman’s Priority Clinic we had last weekend. This year we joined forces with the Open Range Ministry and the Ransom Heart Ranch in Lone Jack to have a very successful event. Thanks to all of our clinicians which included, Richard Shrake, Brent Wright, Rex Buchman, Dawn Dawson, Cindy Branham, Nick O’Dell, Steve Miles, Diane Denham, and Terri Delouche. They did an unbelievable job of bringing equine education to our audience. We had an average of over 200 folks attend from Friday night through Saturday night which concluded with a beautiful Cowboy Church Service. One thing is for sure is that the Purina HOW Events (Horse Owner Workshops) are still alive and well after 14 years.
I hope that all of you are enjoying our Stallion Edition of Better Horses Network. If you do not receive the Better Horses Network publication, you can go to our website at www.betterhorsesnetwork.com and subscribe on line; or drop me a line, and we can get you signed up. Don’t forget to check out our Better Horses Radio Show at www.betterhorsesradio.com.
This week I will be traveling with the Better Horses Radio Trailer to Kansas EquiFest in Wichita. This great event takes place Feb. 13th through Sunday, Feb.15th. Go to the calendar of events and pull up the information. Dawn Dawson and I will be working the Purina Booth at the Better Horses Radio Trailer. Wait until you hear singer, Rusty Rierson, who will be working with us at the Trailer.
As I mentioned earlier, I did attend a Purina Sales Expo last week but I failed to tell you that we played hooky one afternoon. To handle our horse fix, a few of us traveled out to Scottsdale to visit some friends. What a huge treat it was to get to see Al Dunning at his Almosta Ranch. He gave me a copy of his new book, The Ultimate Level Of Horsemanship-Training Through Inspiration. This is a great book and can be ordered off his website at www.aldunningsadtack.com. Believe me, if it can hold my attention and get me to read it from start to finish, it must be really good.
We have a lot of events going on in the next couple
of months, and I hope to see you at these. These events include the Kerry Kuhn
tour which begins Feb.20th through Feb. 24th.
We have a great event scheduled for him at the Winding River Equestrian Center
near Dearborn, Missouri on Sunday, March 22nd. Information is inside this
newsletter or at
www.betterhorsesnetwork.com . Also, don’t forget we have the Curt Pate
Family coming in and doing events from Thursday, March 26th through Wednesday,
April 1st.
Don’t forget our Brent Wright/Dell Hendricks Reining Clinic, May 30th & 31st at the Lone Wolf Arena and Equestrian Center near Cleveland, MO. We will only take 22 riders and have 10 signed up already. Give me a call at 785/418-6047.
Join us for our Spring Dream Ride In The Flint Hills on May 1st, 2nd, & 3rd. at the Flying W Ranch near Cottonwood Falls, KS. It will be the same ranch we have been headquartering at, but we will have new country to ride on.
Isn’t this horse thing fun? . . . and I haven’t even
told you about our new Products that are coming this Spring from Purina Mills!
I hope to see you soon. Let me know if I can be of any help.
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
Provide Rewards
By Ernie Rodina
Make sure you give direction to your horse and
provide a reward when your horse does a maneuver. Some folks get excited when
their horse does a maneuver right and will continue to do that maneuver over and
over again. It is best to do that maneuver a few times and quit which is a
reward for the horse. A horse can get confused by doing it over and over again
which in reality the horse is not being rewarded for his actions.
The truth is we do it over and over again for our own benefit because we as
horseman are not confident yet. This is just one of the many great training tips
mentioned in Al Dunning's new book, The Ultimate Level of Horsemanship.
Horsey Treat Recipe

"Happy Birthday To My Horse" Cake |
Ingredients:
Bran
Oats
Molasses
Shredded Carrots
(Any Other Thing Your Horse Loves!)
Mix the bran, oats and molasses together. Use especially a lot of molasses
to help the mixture harden. Then place it in a flat pan and smooth it out
like a cake. Sprinkle shredded carrots over the "cake." Then pour a
little bit of molasses over the cake to make it set and harden better.
Decorate it with baby carrots (those are your candles) and add a little more
shredded carrots on the top. Place in the fridge overnight to harden.
Your horse should love this -- all that's missing is the Happy Birthday song!
