Horse Management Tip

Wintertime Workouts

By Stephanie McAlexander

As winter quickly bears down upon us, our initial reaction is to hibernate indoors and forget about working our horses.
However, it is important to remember that our horse friends need consistent work to maintain what we have taught them.
From groundwork to full workouts, we can find something to work on in most weather conditions.

If the temperature is below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, a day off is warranted, as it's too cold to be safe for horse or human.
If the temperature is above 20 degrees, but still too cold to ride, you can remind your horse of his ground manners. Make
sure he is soft at the end of your rope, will move his hindquarters or forehand out of your way when you ask, and is
respectful of your space while leading.

Is your horse afraid of the clippers? Is clipping his bridlepath or ears an argument? A cold day can also be used to help
him to accept the clippers. Many times we only work on this the day before going to an event, and usually with a "get it
done" mentality. By working on clipping at a non-important time, we can spend a little time reassuring our horse that the
clippers are not so intimidating. Keep in mind that you do not have to cut any protective winter hair. Usually the sound
and vibration are the culprits, so just moving the clippers over your horse can be very beneficial.

If the temperature is warmer and riding is possible, be aware that your horse will require more warm up and cool down
time than he would in warmer weather. Give him time in the beginning of the session to stretch his muscles. Be sure to do
a little more flexing to help warm up those cold muscles. Also remember that cooling out before blanketing or returning to
the pasture is imperative to avoid pneumonia or tying up.

So as we enter the coldest months of the year, remember that there is more to training your horse than just riding. Reflect
on your horse's abilities and weaknesses and use this time to isolate smaller problems to correct. Come springtime, you
will be ahead of the game!

Horsey Treat Recipe

      Try this special Christmas Treat
                  for your favorite horse --

2 cups alfalfa pellets (ground up in food mill or processor)
    1 cup corn oil
1 cup bran (cereal works fine)
1 cup applesauce or milled apples

Mix well, watching consistency of dough.  Roll tablespoons of dough into balls OR press in bottom of wax-paper-lined pan.

Thoughts To Ponder

                       By Charley Green

The Homeless

During this holiday season, we need to think of those facing
tough times such as the homeless. We all have collective resources
to help supply food, clothing and shelter; however, the most important
thing we can do is provide hope, inspiration and opportunity for them
to step up, come back and regain a measure of quality in their lives.
Figure out how we can give back by investing in our communities in
ways that can help change an individual's life for the better thereby
creating an environment for others to follow.

One of my friends, who was homeless at one time, said:

"Charley, when you give a hand up . . ., instead of a hand
out, this makes all the difference in someone's life because
it helps restore their sense of self-worth, provides a second
                         chance and gives them hope."

Folks, it behooves us to help the homeless in our communities get
back to being productive members of society and not compound their
problems by becoming one of  'em!
