Volume 5, Number 13

Hello Friends!

I apologize that we missed a message to you, but we are back on track. With half of July more than gone, it seems like the summer is flying by. Congratulations to the Buck Creek/Lonesome Pine Ranch Rodeo Team from Chase County, Kansas for qualifying again to the World Championship WRCA Ranch Rodeo in Amarillo this Nov.12 thru 15th. Plan on going with us this year -- we are taking two buses. Last year was a great time. We will be putting the details of the trip which include bus fare, lodging, and tickets.

The American Royal Unbelievable Horse Happening will be a great event to show and participate in this year in Kansas City. Last year we had over 1700 entries in 2 ½ days and we have expanded to an extra day. The dates for this event are Oct.22 thru Oct.25th in Hale Arena. It will be held during the American Royal PRCA Rodeo which is hosting the Prairie Circuit Finals. A big highlight for this year is that we will be drawing for 3 Circle Y saddles. Every time you enter a class you get a chance at a saddle. Also this same weekend they will be having an Equine and Ranch Expo in the Governors building and the Youth Rodeo. You won’t want to miss this weekend at the American Royal. You can go to www.betterhorsesnetwork.com and click on Unbelievable Horse Happening.

Reining horse legend, Bob Loomis, will be hosting an Open House at his ranch, Aug.15th in Marietta, Oklahoma. Bob had a special on the RFD TV show, Inside Reining, promoting the advantage of buying a Professionally Trained Horse. This event, you will have the opportunity to learn more about this along with seeing and trying out his horses. We plan to attend the Purina Day which will actually be held on Friday, Aug. 14th. There is more detailed information on the flyer that is in this letter (Calendar section).  If you would be interested in attending, either e-mail me at ernest_rodina@purina-mills.com or give me a call at 785/418-6047.

This year is our 10th Anniversary of the Fall Dream Ride in the Flint Hills which will be held Sept.25-27 at the Flying W Ranch near Cottonwood Falls, KS. This weekend will include three great rides, wonderful food, great entertainment, door prizes, and great fellowship. For those of you who have been on the ride before at the Flying W, we will be riding new pastures. Information is inside, or you can go to www.betterhorsesnetwork.com or call Suzan Barnes at 620/273-6763.  I hope to see you on the ride.

If you happen to be in the Eastern Kansas area on Aug.7th & 8th, you might plan on attending the Linn County Rodeo in Mound City. They do an excellent job of putting on a PRCA Rodeo.  For more details of this rodeo and fair, see the flyer inside.

We are getting excellent feedback from folks trying our new Omolenes, Equine Junior, and Equine Senior products. When you look at performance and cost/head/day, the Purina Programs are the best way to go. If you would be interested in learning more about these products and giving them a try, you can go to www.purinadifference.com or give me a call at 785/418-6047. We have a tremendous program to give you a chance to try our feed to show you what Purina can do for you. Research makes the difference.

I will talk to you in a couple of weeks. If I can help you in any way, don’t hesitate to give me a call. Until then, enjoy your family, loved ones, friends, and horses.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

Overcoming Obstacles

Repetition is important, but it doesn’t mean going overboard with a lesson if the horse isn’t
getting it right now. You may work hard on a particular part of training but sometimes it just
isn’t working. This is often a good time to give it a rest, especially if both you and the horse
are feeling frustrated. You aren’t giving up on the horse, you are just giving it a break.

No doubt during this time period, you will be thinking about other ways to accomplish the task,
and the funny thing is, the horse may be going over it in his mind as well. You may come back
a couple of days later and find to your surprise that he suddenly does exactly what you have
        been asking for.

The horse may be more intelligent than you give him credit for, and just giving him a break
will sometime allow a lesson to sink in.

Thoughts To Ponder

                       By Charley Green

                                                 Decision Making

When a fellow ain't got much mind, it don't take him long to make it up.
                                                                                     - Will Rogers

Experience combined with wisdom goes a long way towards helping us make
up our minds and hopefully making the right decisions. Knowing the importance
of making good decisions relies on a recipe that includes mixing good information
(knowledge and experience) with a heaping dose of common sense (wisdom) and
then stirring in a little patience for safe measure.

Some of my worst decisions were made when I was flying by the seat of my
pants, without thinking things through; being in a hurry and overlooking what
the consequences might be.  Jumping the gun by making a hasty decision on
the spur of the moment without thinking is just cause for shooting ourselves
       in the foot.

Another area involving choices is our ability to make the right decisions for the
right reasons.  A friend gave me some philosophical insight on what to consider
as I was trying to choose between two courses of action.  The decision I was
wavering on had to do with whether or not to spend the money for a high-dollar
shotgun.  He said, "Charley, a man's not much of a man unless he can
rationalize his way into something he wants."

Boy, have I rationalized my way into some deals when I should've been thinking
logically and considering end results or outcomes.  I've found it's a whole lot
easier and cheaper to rationalize your way into a deal than it is to get yourself out.

We've all made some of those less-than-stellar decisions.  Just remember, a
decision hastily made may have disastrous consequences.  A decision made by
first thinking it through will have a more "harmonious outcome."
