Volume 4, Number 18
Hello, Friends!
I had the opportunity to be in 29 Palms to welcome Luke, our son, home from his second tour in Iraq with the Marines. Also, our other son, Nick who is Luke’s twin brother, was there with his wife and our daughter in-law, Megan, and our two grandchildren, Emma and Aiden. It was a real special weekend!
This week I am preparing for our 9th Annual Dream Ride In The Flint Hills that will be held at the Flying W Ranch near Cottonwood Falls. We still have a few openings, so call Suzan at the Grand Central Hotel and make plans to join us. Her number is 620/273-6763. Information is in this newsletter.
We have several key events coming up this fall, and you sure will want to make plans to attend. Make sure you go to Purina’s website at www.purinamills.com and www.betterhorsesnetwork.com in the next few weeks and try to find a Purina Horse Health Fair in your area.
Don’t forget to attend the American Royal’s Pro Rodeo Weekend this Oct. 23-25th in Kansas City. The American Royal is hosting the PRCA Prairie Circuit Finals that will prove out to be a fantastic weekend. While you are there, check out the Unbelievable Horse Happening that will be held in Hale Arena. Better yet, plan on coming this weekend to show and participate. Also, during these events you can enjoy the trade show along with two full days packed with clinics.
A new event coming to the American Royal will be held on Oct.11th, Saturday evening, in Kemper Arena. World Champion Charro, Jerry Diaz, is bringing his great show, Concert Of Dancing Horses. You will get the opportunity to see many of the beautiful breeds and disciplines perform accompanied by the Kerry Strayer Orchestra. Go to www.americanroyal.com.
I hope that you are enjoying our Fall Edition of the Better Horses Network publication. Let me know if I can be of any help and I look forward to seeing you this fall.
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
For the Love of Dogs
By Sally Dwyer
Seven Oaks Ranch
Sometimes we overlook the fact that our beloved dogs can become a problem to
others. If you board your horse at a stable and you take your dog with you to
the barn, do you turn your dog loose to run where he pleases, or do make sure
they are on a leash or tied up? Most stable owners have a leash law, as loose
dogs can cause a multitude of problems to the other boarders.
Keep not only the other boarders and their horses safe and free from dog
accidents, but also your dog, for he could also become injured.
Horsey Treat Recipe
It's September already, and the kids are back to school! Now is a good time to work with your horse on some training issues -- and you are going to need a special treat as a reward. Try these great horse cookies for your favorite equine friend!
Back-To-School Horse Cookies
1 cup margarine
1 cup diced carrots
1 cup flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 cup brown sugar 2 cups rolled oats
1 cup bran
2 eggs
1 cup diced apples
Cream margarine and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs.
Combine flour, bran and baking soda. Blend into creamed mixture.
Stir in oats, carrots and apples. Drop by spoonfuls onto ungreased baking
sheet. Bake at 325o F for 10-12 mins. Remove and cool.
Makes about 4 dozen cookies.
