July 7, 2008
Volume 4, Number 13
Hello, Friends!
I hope all of you enjoyed the July 4th Weekend. It was a great weekend, getting to experience the fireworks and the first fresh sweet corn. The fireworks experience was a little challenging, however. You see directly across the road about a ¼ mile away there is a tremendous fireworks display put on by some folks that make it a yearly tradition. Then directly behind our place the neighbors were having their own party with their fireworks. It was like “Shock & Awe” in the Rodina neighborhood where I experienced the fireworks in a round pen trying to keep mares and foals from jumping the fence and leaving the country. The good news is after it was all over if I ever wanted to shoot elk off the back of these horses, you probably could now.

A highlight of the weekend is talking to our son, Luke, in
Iraq. He is scheduled to get home the later part of September. Please keep him and all of our servicemen and women in your prayers. |
The Better Horses Radio Show will soon be heard in the Springfield, Missouri area. On July 19th , 92.9 FM Bass Country will begin airing our weekly show. I really want to thank Randy Little who owns PFI Western Store for making this possible. We will air at 5:00 am on Sunday, and I figure we will have a diverse group of listeners. We will get the horse owners that might be getting up to fish, the horse owners that are getting up early, and those horse owners that might be just getting home. Needless to say, we are excited about getting in this market on a great station.
Don’t forget to check out www.omoleneuniversity.com and www.betteranimals.com . . . these are great websites filled with valuable information. I need to direct my attention to working on the Unbelievable Horse Happening this October at the American Royal. It will be held the same weekend as the American Royal’s Pro Rodeo’s Prairie Circuit Finals Oct. 23, 24, & 25th in Kansas City. You won’t want to miss this! Be watching for more information on www.betterhorsesnetwork.com and www.americanroyalprorodeo.com.
Let me know if I can be of any help.
Happy Trails!

NEED YOUR HELP -- STOLEN TACK
MISSING IN KEARNEY, MO
Nancy Ellerman's barn was broken into on June 6 (vicinity of 92 Highway and
Cameron Road) and all of their show and working tack was stolen. The
dressage saddle was not quite a month old and the hunt tack had a lot of
regional/national memories. Please forward to any horse owners, auction
houses or equine businesses that you think may be of help. If you have any
information regarding this missing equipment, please contact Nancy at (816)
305-9613 or the Clay County Sheriff's Department. For more details and
pictures of the stolen equipment,

Horse Management Tip
The Three-Second Response
Let's say your horse does something you don't want him to do. Your response
to his behavior must be within 3 seconds. If you are longer than that, the horse
has no idea what you are correcting him for. Actually the consequences should be
during the behavior. This lets the horse make the connection between his
behavior and your response.
This also applies to good behavior. If we reward him with a release of pressure,
then this is when he learns what you are working to teach him.
The next time you correct him for not responding to your command, make sure you
correct him in the "three-second period", because after that the horse is
already thinking about something else.

Thoughts To Ponder
By Charley Green
Mistakes
"Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad
judgment." - Will Rogers
We've all made a mistake or two concerning business, life choices or
relationships. Now, one thing I've realized after doing some soul
searching, forgiveness work and reading is that nowhere could I find we're only
entitled to one mistake in our lives. The lesson is what we do with the
experience -- relive it or repeat it as some folks are prone to do -- or make
amends, learn from it and work at getting better at those things causing the
mistakes in the first place.
If we're too stubborn to learn from our mistakes, just remember what someone
once said: "Beauty may only be skin deep, but stupid can go clear to
the bone."
