Volume 2, Number 18
Hello Friends,
I hope you are enjoying our Fall Edition of the New Better Horses Network publication. We really have a lot going on and coming up this fall. Make sure you plan to attend one of our Horse Health Fair meetings that are scheduled the next three months. These will provide a good opportunity for us to get together and talk about horses.
Have you checked out our new website? Go to www.betterhorsesnetwork.com and see what we have going on. Thanks to our team mate, Sally Dwyer, for managing this site and bringing new stuff! Also you can go from that site to our other site which is www.betterhorsesradio.com and see what is happening with our Radio Show. We just picked up another station in Benton, Kentucky that will begin airing Better Horses this coming weekend. Better Horses Radio now airs on 12 stations across the country.
How about this for news! I just heard from my good friend, Bill Hull, out at the Saddle and Sirloin Club in Kansas City that CRAIG CAMERON AND HIS EXTREME COWBOY RACE IS COMING TO THE S&S CLUB IN KANSAS CITY! Mark your calendars for June 22nd,23rd, & 24th of 2007 and plan to attend. This will be a weekend of fun. I hear the books will open for entries after Jan.1, 2007.
Looking for something to do this coming weekend? I understand that the Peace Treaty Celebration is something to experience in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. They have a great festival along with two nights of Ranch Rodeo competition.
If anyone is looking for a good S& H-3-Horse bumper trailer, I have one for sale. Give me a call at 785/418-6047.
If you receive this before Sept.18th at 7:00pm CST, make sure you tune into RFD TV”S MONDAY NIGHT LIVE! - Purina’s Nutritional Education Series Talk Show. Tonight’s show starts Sept.18th, 7:00pm CST and focuses on Horse Nutrition. Tune In-Learn- and Call in your questions.
I appreciate all of you who are feeding the Purina Program. For those of you who aren’t, we would love to have the opportunity to work with you. When you look at the nutrition that is delivered to your horse plus all of the safety precautions that go into making it, Purina is second to none. E-mail me or give me a call and let me know if we can be of help.
Aren’t we having fun?! I will talk to you in a couple of weeks.
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
The Elbow . . . Our Tool Of Defense
Does your horse sometimes do something you don’t want him to do? Maybe he tries to run over you when you’re leading him, or nips when you saddle him. If so, then maybe you’re not correcting him in a timely and fair way. If you’re discipline is not consistent and your timing is off, even by just a few seconds, then you would be better off not doing anything at all.
Let’s say your horse tries to nip you when you’re trying to saddle him. You take a big swing with your hand trying to smack him on the neck or face. Perhaps you missed and take another swing, this time you connect. Now, what does this convey to your horse? First, it tells him that you are a predator and out to hurt him, and second, your contact hit was most likely too late, and he has no idea what he was hit for. The next time he goes to nip you, meet him half way with your elbow. He’ll think he did it to himself, and then you’re not seen as the bad guy. Your elbow is a handy tool when used properly and at just the right time.

Horsey Treat Recipe
Try this special treat for your favorite horse . . .
Whinny Bars
2 cups oats
3/4 cup grain
3 cups bran
1 cup molasses (may have to adjust depending on how sweet your grain is)
Mix oats, grain and bran together (use a bucket). Drizzle in molasses
while mixing with your hands. You're looking for a consistency a little
thinner than play-doh. Place dollops (about half a handful) on a cookie
sheet and bake at 375o for about ten minutes. Watch
carefully--these bars have a tendency to burn. They never get completely
hard, but they will store nicely.
Another option is to spread the mixture in a pan and bake it like bars. It
can be a little difficult to get out of the pan, though, so be sure to grease
the pan first.
This recipe will make a lot -- so adjust according to your needs.
