Hello Friends!
I apologize for the time lapse since sending you the last
newsletter. Wow! When folks say it will be a month until the pain begins
subsiding in torn ribs, I would say they are probably right. Twenty-two
days ago, I learned the hard way that you should always be alert when
sitting on your horse. As I reached to my right to shake hands with a
friend, little did I know that the horse I was sitting on would think this
fellow would be a bear. At 55 years old you don't bounce off the
ground liked you used to.
The Purina Junior Barrel Classic in Claremore, Oklahoma
was held last weekend with Purina hosting an OPEN 4-D Race with $1500 cash
added.
Our Horse Owner Workshops (HOW Meetings) are getting into
full swing. If you want to find out about all of the HOW Meetings coming up, go to
www.purinamills.com or
www.betterhorsesnetwork.com. It is great seeing everyone at these
meetings.
Two great products as a result of Purina’s Research are
now available at Purina Dealers. Ultium Growth is a great new product for
Broodmare performance along with growing colts. Research was done against
our Omolene 300 and showed significant improvement in growth and muscle
development with the new Ultium Growth.
Another new product is our Strategy Healthy Edge which is
designed for the horse with less demanding activity. Lower Protein, added
Amplify Fat nugget, lower calories, Strategy Healthy Edge will run 16-17%
in starch & sugars.
Better Horses Radio is excited to have expanded to the
Wichita, Kansas area now being aired on KFTI 1070 The Ranch every Saturday
morning at 11:30. Also, thanks to teaming up with the Mid America Ag
Network, we are in Guyman, Oklahoma with KGYN 1210, Garden City, KS. On KUIL 1310, and also Scott City, Kansas on KIUL 1210 radio. We are on these
stations every Saturday morning at 8:00am. You can always check us out by
going to www.betterhorsesradio.com .
If anyone is looking for a good pony, we have one for
sale. I would say it would be for a child that is in that 7 year old
range. She has been used in the arena for races and she also does a good
job on the trails. Either call me at 785/418-6047 or email me at
ernie@betterhorsesradio.com.
Thanks for all you do and don't hesitate to let me know
what I can do for you.
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip

Horses on Pasture
In turning your horses out to the lush green pasture, make sure you do it
gradually for safety reasons. 1-2 hours each day for the first week is a good
practice.
Due to the fact that most of the sugar in the plant is in the roots during the
morning hours, this time of the day is the best choice. You can then increase
the amount of time your horse is out each week. Your horse is getting used to it
along with the forage becoming more mature.

Horsey Treat Recipe
|
 |
Springtime Horse Cookies |
A great treat for your favorite horse . . .
Ingredients:
6 cups bran
2 cups oatmeal
2 cups cracked corn
2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
2 tblsp. salt
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 eggs
16 oz. sweetened apple juice
2/3 cup molasses
6 tblsp. corn oil
Preheat oven to 325oF. Roll the dough into one- or two-inch
balls. Place on greased cookie sheet. Bake for 45 minutes or until
they are dry and crisp. (Dough is very sticky; it helps to dip your hands
in water periodically while handling it.) A sweet treat for your favorite horse!
Thoughts To Ponder
By Charley Green

Change
Some folks like to take on the role as a fixer of other's personal
problems in hopes those troubled folks will change and align with the
fixer's own attitude and way of thinking. Funny thing though, usually
the fixer * ain't interested in fixing or changing their own selves as
they'd rather tell you -- "You know what your problem is?" -- as
opposed to them looking in the mirror and doing their own homework.
Now I want to be clear on what I mean by fixing. This term may mean
something different on the farm or ranch than it does in the city.
Although after pondering a bit, it might not be a bad idea for some of those
unwilling to change to have a little fixin' done on themselves?
* I know a lot of
folks who don't say ain't . . . ain't eating.
