Volume 5, Number 10

Hello Friends!

We have had a few things happen since last talking to you. First of all we have had to cancel our Brent Wright/Dell Hendricks Million Reining Clinic that was scheduled for May 30th & 31st in Topeka, KS.  I hope we did not inconvenience anyone too much.

Also, last Wednesday morning when I went out to feed, our mare came up with her new foal, a sorrel filly by Meradas Money Talks. That is the best way to have a foal when you can wake up the next day, and here comes the mare with her foal. It is kind of like Christmas.

We recently took our first large road trip with the Better Horses Radio Trailer and traveled to Marshall, Texas to attend the Martha Josey Junior World Barrel Championships. What a great time we had, and their hospitality was just unbelievable. I would strongly urge all young barrel racers to talk their parents into getting you to experience one of these.  Martha and her husband, Josey, are truly great professionals.

Our New Omolenes® and improved Equine Senior® and Equine Junior® have now been launched, and the response we are getting back from the horse owners has been tremendous. Our New Omolenes® 400 and 500 are performing great, resulting in performance that our research said they would get. To give our new products a try with your horses, you can log onto www.purinadifference.com to sign your horse up on a trial and receive some valuable coupons.

I just finished up my Summer Edition of Better Horses Network, which you will receive in a few days. We have some great events coming up in the next few months that you will not want to miss. The American Royal’s Unbelievable Horse Happening has all of their information in this edition. This proved out to be a great show last fall at the American Royal with over 1700 entries in 2 days. Also, there is information about our 10th Annual Dream Ride In The Flint Hills scheduled for this September.  I have attached more information in the Calendar section of this newsletter.

I have the privilege to be on the American Royal’s Market Place committee which plans the Trade Show during the American Royal PRCA Rodeo and Unbelievable Horse Happening. Well I am excited to announce that this year during this great weekend, the American Royal will launch the first American Royal Equine & Ranch Expo. Scheduled for Oct.22nd thru 25th, now you can spend the day or weekend going to the Unbelievable Horse Happening , great Equine & Ranch Expo, and then attend the PRCA Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo that evening. The Equine and Ranch Expo will involve a huge Equine Trade Show, two Priefert Round Pens with clinicians scheduled, and the Better Horses Radio Trailer with lots of entertainment. You won’t want to miss this weekend! If you are interested in purchasing a booth for the trade show, don’t hesitate to e-mail me at ernest_rodina@purina-mills.com.

With this weekend being Memorial Day Weekend, I see it as the official start of summer at the Rodina home. If you are around Topeka, KS this weekend, stop by the Expo Centre and watch the Kansas NBHA State Finals. I will fry you up a hamburger on Saturday night.

Let me know if I can be of help in any way. I hope to see you around either at a show, event, or on the trail.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

                                                                                       Hand Feeding
                                                                                       by Sally Dwyer
                                                                                    Seven Oaks Ranch

So many horse owners are unaware that they are actually training their horses to have some pretty bad habits. These habits can include pushing, bumping, nipping, pawing, chewing on
equipment, and refusing to stand still. Way too often, the horse owner will hand feed the horse a carrot or other treat with the idea that it will help the horse to stop whatever he is doing.
What the owner has actually done is train the horse that bad behavior gets a reward. The owner is teaching their horse to crowd and generally move into the owner’s space, thus making
hand feeding potentially very dangerous. Hand feeding will teach a horse to have blatant disrespect for the owner when looking for their treat.

If you have a horse with any one of these bad habits, try putting his treat in his feeder before you put him away, then the treat won’t be associated with you and his bad habit. Hopefully,
after some time, you and your horse will have a relationship that does not include all the problems that hand feeding causes.

Horsey Treat Recipe

Spring showers bring May flowers!  Try this Spring treat for your favorite horse!

    Cookies to Celebrate May

         Flower Cookies

Ingredients:
Dry Mix
10 cups flour
1-2/3 cups instant non-fat dry milk
1/3 cup baking powder
2-1/2 tsp. salt
1-2/3 cups shortening
1 or 2 carrots, coarsely grated
2/3 cup water
1/4 cup sugar (optional)

Combine dry ingredients in a large Tupperware container that can be covered and refrigerated.  Add shortening and mix with a blender until mix looks like fine crumbs.  It will last 3 months in the fridge.  Take 3 cups Dry Mix, 1 or 2 carrots coarsely grated, 2/3 cup water, 1/4 cup sugar (optional).  Preheat oven to 425o.  Combine Dry Mix, carrots and sugar in large bowl; gradually add water to make dough soft, but not sticky.  Knead dough on a floured board about 15 times.  Divide roll in half and roll each section out flat, about 1/4 inch thick.  Cut with a flower cookie cutter (or any cookie cutter of your choice) and bake about 10 mins. until lightly browned . . . a wonderful treat for a special horse!

 Thoughts To Ponder

                       By Charley Green

It's A Business

Now every Story should point a Moral, and this one is:  If you are going to paint (or do
anything else) know what you are painting about; and if you are going to marry, marry
somebody that can manage you RIGHT.
                                                                    - Will Rogers

Most of us would rather start out on top and skip all that in-between stuff we've gotta do
to get there.  I admit there are times I'd prefer to start out on top of the mountain without
having to climb it first.  Sometimes engaging in a little wishful thinking, I wonder what it
would be like to sell 100,000 books the first time out and speak before groups of 5,000
people willing to pay a hefty price to hear me talk.

Then a jackass begins to bray, and I wake up from this wishful dreaming and know there's
only one way I or any of us are going to get to the top.  The dues has got to be paid:  writing,
re-writing and pitching the books to publishers.  Then test out the material by talking about
it before groups large and small; whether it's speaking before a Rotary or a Lions meeting,
church group or any organization that'll give up some speaking time.

This lays the foundation for getting my number ten foot in the front door and a toehold for climbing to the mountain top.  It's the
same whether you're aspiring to be a musician, million dollar reiner or president of a company.

The only person responsible for our success is the person looking back at us in the mirror.  That responsibility can't be handed over,
delegated or surrendered to anyone else.

Folks, when you get right down to it, life is a business.  It's our business and how well we run it that determines the level of success
we achieve in our relationships, financial rewards and the difference we make in our life and the lives of those we touch.  We can't
do it alone . . . even the Lone Ranger had his trusty companion and partner, Tonto.
