Volume 4, Number 21
Hello, Friends!
It has been a fast and furious two weeks since talking to you. The American Royal’s Unbelievable Horse Happening was a huge success on the weekend of Oct. 24th & 25th with over 1500 entries. It started out on Thursday evening with a Ranch Horse Clinic by Craig Cameron and a hamburger fry hosted by the area Purina Dealers. I want to thank Jim McNair, Darby Zaremba, Abbie Grossnicklaus, Debbie Davis, Terri Delouche, Linda Grimmet, and the whole Unbelievable Horse Happening Team for making it such a success. Thanks goes out to Purina Mills, Better Horses Radio, and Adequan for sponsoring the beautiful windshirts that were earned by the 4-H exhibitors. This event, which was tied to the PRCA Prairie Circuit Finals that was held in Kemper, made for a great weekend at the Royal! Plans are to expand this event to 4 days next year and, of course, still be a part of the American Royal’s PRCA Prairie Circuit Finals.
Don’t forget the World Championship Extreme Cowboy Race hosted by Craig Cameron on November 14-16 at the Saddle and Sirloin Club in Kansas City. You won’t want to miss this event. More information is inside and you can call Bill Hull at 913/208-6381.
I am looking forward to going to Amarillo on November 14 with my friends from Chase County Kansas. We will be taking a bus to the WRCA World Championship Ranch Rodeo. Good luck to the Buck Creek/Lonesome Pine Ranch Team.
I will be working on our Winter Edition of Better Horses Network. My deadline for any ads will be by Wednesday, November 12th. If interested, give Connie a call at 785/242-8555 or 785/418-2615. This edition will complete nine years of existence for Better Horses Network.
The American Royal is still going on. You can check out their schedule by going to www.americanroyal.com. Don’t miss the NCHA Cutting Horse Show on November 12-14th at Hale Arena at the American Royal.
I would like to welcome our newest Purina Dealer! Feldmans in Blue Springs, MO, Liberty, MO, Odessa, Missouri, and Bonner Springs, Kansas will kick off their line of Purina Feeds on Saturday, November 29th. We are happy to have them back on the team.
Don’t forget to check out our websites at www.betterhorsesradio.com and www.betterhorsesnetwork.com. Also, if you want to enhance your knowledge of the horse and earn feed and cool stuff, go to www.omoleneuniversity.com.
If you are interested in giving Purina Feeds a try on your operation, get in touch with us by giving us a call. We have an excellent opportunity to show you what Purina can do with our Strategy Trial program. Don’t hesitate to give me a call at 785/418-6047.
I hope to see you soon!
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
Have Patience and Devote The Time!
Recently a couple of weekends ago while my son was showing his horse, we tried to clip his horse’s bridle path. Those clippers turned out to be a mountain lion that was going to eat him. Rather than try to fight him, I felt I would deal with this issue when I got home.
I think it is important to work on the little things that seem to be issues.
Last Saturday, I spent about an hour and a half just getting the horse
reintroduced back to the clippers. It sometimes seems more important to just get
on and ride, rather than spend the time moving clippers all around the horse.
The end results of my efforts had the horse accepting the clippers all around
his face and bridle path.
I think we need to commit to what we hear all the time from top clinicians, and
that is “groundwork” is very important. And when done right will result in a
better trained horse. So when you spend time with your horse or horses, it pays
off to work on the little things.
Horsey Treat Recipe
Autumn Oaties
Dry Ingredients:
2 cups white or yellow corn meal
3 cups old-fashioned oats (not instant)
2 cup flaxseed OR wheat germ OR whole oats OR bran OR
horse grain of choice
1 cup non-fat dry milk powder
1 tblsp. baking powder
6 cups flour
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 tblsp. salt
Wet Ingredients:
2 cups light or dark molasses (one 16-oz. jar) OR corn syrup OR
combination
1 cup corn oil
Water to moisten (do this last)
Preheat oven to 275oF. In a big bowl, mix together the dry
ingredients. Add the wet ingredients and stir thoroughly to blend -- about
2 or 3 minutes. Add enough water to make a stiff dough, but don't add too
much. Divide the dough between 2 lightly greased jelly-roll pans (looks
like a cookie sheet with shallow rims on sides). Using your hands, pat the
dough gently to level it off and fill each pan completed. Bake at 275oF
for one hour.
After an hour, remove from the oven. Using a sharp knife or a pizza
cutter, score into 1- or 2-inch blocks. You don't have to cut all the way
through -- just make indentations.
Return to the oven and bake until almost all the water has evaporated -- usually
around another half hour (depending on humidity, characteristics of ingredients,
etc.). Don't brown the treats -- just dry them out. Cool in the pan
and then break into pieces along the score marks. Will keep indefinitely
in a tightly closed container. A great autumn treat for your special
horse!
Warning: One husband found the cooling treats and started
eating them -- if this happens, it is probably best NOT to tell your husband he
has just eaten a horse treat -- let him think this is some new "health cookie"
you've devised! (p.s. He'll stop whinnying in a few days -- just a
minor side effect!!)
Thoughts To Ponder
By Charley Green
Habits
If our way of doing things isn't working for us, it's probably
because of being hitched to old habits and ways of thinking. If we're
capable of investing in a pickup or new clothes, then we sure as heck can change
our old habits and ways of thinking by investing in a new mindset.
Now if you have a mindset that believes the expression, "You can't teach an old
dog new tricks," you're right. Old dog thinking doesn't like to or want to
change.
I know some folks with old habits that aren't serving them have become
comfortable in their uncomfortability. It's got more to do with false
pride, stubbornness, fearfulness and laziness than ability and potential.
Now I've had to do my share of breaking away from old habits. If I hadn't,
I would not have learned the computer, wrote a few books or spoke to different
audiences as well as work at my horsemanship skills.
Now I'm not a spring chicken; however, my ATTITUDE and WILLINGNESS to learn new
tricks at least lets me lope with the big dogs and keeps me in the race. I
may not have the legs, but I've still got the heart.
