Fashion Warning – Wrangler
Discontinuing Cowgirl Higher Rise Jeans
More bad news on the horizon for us cowgirls who don’t like the low rise
jeans! Cruel Girl did away with their “original rise” fit jeans a year ago.
Now Wrangler is discontinuing the higher rise Calgary and Tulsa fits from
their product line and beefing up the style selection in the new Cash, Jet
and Q-Baby Ultimate Riding Jeans. If the Calgary or Tulsa fit is one of your
favorites, better stock up before they are gone. We are happy to special
order these jeans for you if we don’t have them in stock.
The good news is that Wrangler is coming out with a “brown color” Q-Baby right after the first of the year. They are very nice and we have ordered some great coordinating blouses and tanks to go with them!

Hat Sponges – Great for Catfish Bait
The secret is out. The best sponge available for catching catfish is the
orange M & F Western hat cleaning sponge sold at Roy Frey Western. Whether
you make your own sponge bait or use a commercial brand, you want it to stay
on the sponge and you want the sponge to be tough enough to last through
several bites. Our sponges meet that test. Most fishermen simply cut the hat
sponges into smaller sizes, appropriate for the size hook they use, thread
it onto the hook, dip it in the sponge bait and start catching fish. The
sponges sell for $2.99 per two sponge package and may be cut into as many as
two dozen fishable chunks depending on size bait preferred.

Fun Fact for September
• 7.1 million Americans are involved in the industry as horse owners,
service providers, employees and volunteers. 3.6 million and 4.3 million of
those participated in showing and recreation,
respectively, with some overlap in cases of people who participate
in both activities. 941,000 people participated in racing in either a
professional or volunteer capacity. 1.9 million people
own horses. In addition to the people actually involved in the
industry, tens of millions more Americans participate as spectators.
• The horse industry directly produces goods and services of $25.3 billion
and has a total impact of $112.1 billion on U.S. gross domestic product.
Racing, showing and recreation each
contribute more than 25% to the total value of goods and services
produced by the industry.
• The industry's contribution to the U.S. GDP is greater than the motion
picture services, railroad transportation, furniture and fixtures
manufacturing and tobacco product manufacturing
industries. It is only slightly smaller than the apparel and other
textile products manufacturing industry.

Quote for September
"Don't compromise on obedience. The sooner you convey (or remind) your horse
who's boss, the better you're
going
to get along, and the more fun you're going to have out on any trail."
--Julie Goodnight
Liz’s Trail Corner – September Trail Tip
In the event that you and your horse are separated--which we hope does not happen--it is a good idea to have some form of identification attached to your tack. A luggage tag is a simple solution attached to your saddle. Marking your saddle with some type of permanent marker, leather branding or stamping is an excellent way to identify your tack and also as theft prevention. Along with marking your tack be sure to record any serial numbers from saddles and always take a good picture of your tack to keep in your file. Don’t forget to have some good ID photos of your horse as well!
It is also very important for all riders to carry identification and medical information just in case of an accident which might leave the rider incapacitated
Some good things to put in your saddle bag: Benadryl (just in case of bee stings), a whistle, insect repellant, hoof pick, pliers or wire cutter, shoe laces (to repair tack), knife, paper and pencil, energy bars, and horse snacks. These items would all fit easily into many of the compact horn and cantle bags that we feature at Roy Frey’s.
Wanted: Dead or Alive – Gator
Theives
Scalps would do just fine for the dirty rotten, yellow-bellied, lilly-livered,
no good SOBs, lower than a snakes belly in a wagon rut, scum-sucking, no
count, low-life thieves who stole our 2005 John Deere Gator out of our horse
barn August 16th. Didn’t start it – just put it in neutral and rolled it out
to a waiting trailer. Be warned – it could happen to anyone! What is our
world coming to?
Ziplock Bags
Those handy ziplock bags! Last month we talked about making “omelets in a
bag” using ziplock bags. Now I have found out how to keep those pesky flies
out of my living quarter horse trailer when out camping!
Fill a ziplock bag with water and add 5 or 6 pennies and hang it in the
problem area. Regarding the science behind ziplock bags of water, research
shows that each of the millions of molecules of water presents its own prism
effect and given that flies have a lot of eyes, to them it's like a zillion
disco balls reflecting light, colors and movement in a dizzying manner. When
you figure that flies are basically prey for many other bugs, animals,
birds, etc., they simply won't take the risk of being around that much
perceived action. Some say that wasps and flies mistake the bag for some
sort of other insect nest and are threatened by this. It’s worth a try!

What’s
Cooking? - At Roy Frey Western Lifestyles |
While Dewayne and I were at Fort Robinson, Crawford, NE on our trail riding
vacation a few weeks ago, a couple approached us after seeing the RFW
signage on the truck and said “You buy our cookbooks!” It was our friends,
the Kerby’s, from Kearney, NE. They were also taking a short vacation and
had come to Fort Robinson to enjoy the wonderful riding and history. We had
a great visit and replenished our stock of their two cookbooks:
American West Cookin’ and Range Rider’s Cookin’ – both
packed with great recipes and selling for only $12.95. Perfect gift for the
western cook or the cookbook collector like me. The artwork by Bob Kerby’s
Longhorn Studio is sprinkled throughout the book with color copies of his
paintings as the dividers. I found the Wild Game section contained lots of
interesting recipes for things like venison, deer, coon, prairie chicken,
frog leg, prairie shrimp (rattlesnake) and buffalo, just to name a few.
Here’s a couple recipes from the cookbooks that sound really good to me:
Cowboy Artists Delight (Sour Cream Pecan Pie)
1 unbaked 9 inch pastry shell
3 eggs, slightly beaten
½ C sour cream
1 C sugar
½ C dark corn syrup
2 T. margarine, melted
1 tsp vanilla
1/8 tsp salt
1 ¼ C pecan halves
Pierce pastry shell thoroughly with fork. Bake in 400 degree oven for 8 minutes, or until lightly browned. Cool. In a medium bowl, stir together eggs and sour cream until smooth. Stir in sugar, corn syrup, margarine, vanilla, and salt until well mixed. Stir in pecans. Pour into pre-baked pastry shell. Bake in a 400o oven for 30-35 minutes or until filling is slightly puffy, but set, about 1inch from edge. Cool on wire rack.
Roast Chicken (The Cowboy Way)
1 chicken, walking
A bug
Salt & pepper to taste
First, find a chicken in the yard. Then find a bug in the yard. Catch the bug. Get the chicken’s attention and show her that she can have this fat juicy bug if she will just come closer. If she comes closer, you’re having chicken for supper. When the distance is right, and before your stomach growls and warns the chicken, drop the bug and grab the chicken (preferably by the neck). Kill, pluck, singe, clean, wash, de-foot and de-neck the chicken. Put the chicken in a pan, add salt and pepper to taste. Bake at 350o for 45 to 60 minutes. Serves 1 to 3, depending on how hungry you were when you saw the chicken and on how long it takes you to catch a bug on an empty stomach.
Donate Old Cowboy Boots to Winding River Girl
Scouts
Winding River Camp & Equestrian Center, Dearborn, MO is in need of “well
loved” and in good condition cowboy boots. Many of the 2nd – 8th grade girls
may only get the opportunity to come to Winding River once a year. They
often do not have boots or helmets so Winding River provides them. This has
become quite a challenge as well over a 1,000 young girls come to Winding
River for the Spring and Fall Program. We would welcome all sizes of used
boots. Roy Frey Western in Topeka and Y Bar H in Olathe has offered to serve
as drop off locations. If you would like more information about Winding
River you can go to:

Cost: $10

Tickets available at the door, at
Country Cupboard on Main St. in Fort Scott, or by mailing check to 2280
Hackberry Rd., Fort Scott, KS 66701
A beautiful and talented 17-year-young woman is coming to Fort Scott September 19th to perform in the new Danny and Willa Ellis Family Fine Arts Center at Fort Scott Community college. She goes by first name only, Adrian, and can write and belt out songs that belie her youth. According to Judy Howser, Echoes of the Trail organizer, Adrian's lyrics would make an excellent book of cowboy poetry. Howser says Adrian writes of life on the trail in the 1900s as well as how it is to herd cattle and work on a ranch in the present day. She writes from experience on ranches in Elko County, Nevada and in California.
This young woman recorded her first CD at the age of 14, and her song The
Will James Days was listed as "One of the 13 Best Cowboy Songs of All Time"
in the April edition of Western Horseman magazine! Hear a portion of
her music on her web site,
www.buckaroogirl.com.
She sings acoustic folk/country music with hardcore lyrics that are
influenced equally by her having grown up on ranches throughout the West,
and her early childhood in Europe. Adrian's style of writing and singing has
been compared to Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Jewel. She
has sung opera and played classical piano, yet just Adrian and her acoustic
guitar sound like a cowgirl with 30 years of experience riding and singing
cowboy music. She sings ballads as well as swing, blues-type music, and she
can yodel, too! According to Howser, young people and older folks all find
her irresistible.
Almost as soon as Adrian's debut album Highway 80 was released, people started clamoring for more, and the press wanted interviews! Adrian has had extensive radio, newspaper and television coverage throughout California, Nevada and Utah and her song "Winter Blues" was in the Top 40 for over six months on songplanet.com. You can hear and see one of her interviews on her web site. She has appeared with Baxter Black, Red Steagall, and other well-known cowboy performers, and Echoes of the Trail organizers hope her second CD also will be available for sale at FSCC September 19th.
Opening for Adrian will be our own Echoes of the Trail founder, Johnny Kendrick, who is a talented guitarist, banjo player, singer, and composer who wrote our theme song, Echoes of the Trail. Johnny is very popular in Fort Scott, and those hearing him for the first time are impressed with his voice and ability to sing the real, old, cowboy songs.
Adrian will be in Branson in September and has agreed to do a benefit for Echoes of the Trail while she is in the area! This will be a performance young and old won't want to miss. Tickets will be on sale at Country Cupboard, 12 N. Main St., Fort Scott, Kan., by mail to 2280 Hackberry Rd., Fort Scott, KS 66701, or at the door. Tickets are $10, and FSCC students with valid student ID will be admitted for $7 each. All proceeds will go toward Echoes of the Trail 2010.
