Wright Flight Trail Ride – A Wonderful Ride
and Successful Event
Hats off to all the sponsors, volunteers and participants at the 3rd Annual
Wright Flight Trail Ride held May 24th at Eisenhower State Park. We had 65
riders who enjoyed either a “fast” or “slow” guided ride. The barbeque dinner
provided by Black Eye BBQ, Resers, Frito-Lay, and Schmidt Vending was so good!
Paul Pingleton, our spirited auctioneer, entertained as sold the many donated
items in the live auction. This event raised a lot of money for aviation fuel
for the volunteer pilots who fly the kids in the Wright Flight Program and for
that we are ever so grateful to everyone involved. Thank you all and we will
plan on another trail ride next year.

Quote for June
"When I bestride him, I soar, I am a hawk: he trots the air; the earth sings
when he touches it; the basest horn of his hoof is more musical than the pipe of
Hermes."
~ William Shakespeare, Henry V
Liz’s Trail Corner
Trail riding season is here. Time to leg up your horse and dust off the tack. We
really need to think about what we are doing before loading up and heading out
to the trail ride. There are many great rides whether competition, fund raising,
club events or just friends getting together. Please remember just as you have a
responsibility to yourself and your mount when we are riding in public places we
have a responsibility to other riders as well.
Many folks have a young or new-to-them horse. Young horses and new horses need to become established to the ways of trail riding in small groups not on large rides. Shorter distances with enough time to work with obstacles without blocking trail traffic will make for happier and safer riders.
Remembering common sense trail manners is a must. Just for instance here are
a few reminders for all riders:
1. Stay with your group--horses will be happier with the company they keep.
2. Ask for and give permission to pass on trails.
3. If your horse isn’t ready for obstacles such as water crossings --do your
schooling before the ride. Don’t become an accident waiting to happen.
4. Don’t rush up behind a horse. You could cause a spook, bolt or even be
kicked.
5. Don’t decide to gallop back to the trailer.
6. Take care of your horse first upon arriving in camp.
7. Make sure that your tack is properly fitted and in excellent condition.
8. If something happens and your horse gets unruly; it’s better to dismount; do
some ground work and then continue.
9. Consider wearing a helmet.
10. Never speed up without first informing everyone in your group. You might be
surprised at how many horses are in your herd.
11. Be aware of the riders and horses in your group. Their experience level,
fitness and special needs.
12. Allow your horse to drink at every opportunity.
13. Don’t leave someone closing the gate.
Just some reminders to ponder – Happy Trails and be safe.

What’s
Cooking? - At Roy Frey Western Lifestyles |
Following a very successful Wright Flight Trail Ride, we relaxed around the
campfire and shared a great appetizer made by Cheryl Thomas – it was an “old”
recipe that is still a favorite. The next morning, Brandi Lewis served a great
Breakfast Burrito that is easy and delicious. The Mexican Velveeta is the secret
ingredient! Hope you enjoy both recipes – we most certainly did!
Layered Mexican Dip
Layer #1 - Mix 8 oz cream cheese and 8 oz sour cream. Spread over tray.
Sprinkle with seasoned salt.
Layer #2 - 1 can refried beans mixed with enough salsa to make it easy
to spread over first layer. (I usually use at least medium salsa for
flavor.)
Layer #3 - shredded lettuce
Layer #4 - chopped green onions
Layer #5 - shredded cheese (Colby/Jack or Cheddar)
Layer #6 - chopped tomatoes
Layer #7 - chopped black olives
Serve with Fritos scoops or tortilla chips.
Breakfast Burritos
Flour tortillas
12 eggs (1 dozen per pound of sausage)
Mexican Velveeta Cheese
1 lb sausage (recommend R.B. Rice Medium)
Green pepper chopped
Medium onion diced
Brown sausage, onion and green pepper together and drain grease when browned. Beat eggs and add to browned sausage mix and cook until done. Place a slice of Mexican Velveeta Cheese in center of tortilla. Fill with the sausage and egg mixture. Roll up like a burrito. Eat immediately with salsa or freeze for future breakfasts.
Donate Old Cowboy Boots to Winding River Girl Scouts
Winding River Camp & Equestrian Center, Dearborn, MO is in need of “well loved”
and in good condition cowboy boots. Many of the 2nd – 8th grade girls may only
get the opportunity to come to Winding River once a year. They often do not have
boots or helmets so Winding River provides them. This has become quite a
challenge as well over a 1,000 young girls come to Winding River for the Spring
and Fall Program. We would welcome all sizes of used boots. Roy Frey Western in
Topeka and Y Bar H in Olathe has offered to serve as drop off locations. If you
would like more information about Winding River you can go to:
www.theranchatloneoak.com or contact Linda Grimmett (816) 914-0490.

“Massage Your Own Horse” Clinics
Jacqueline Wilt, R.N., C.E.M.T. will be teaching horse owners how to “Massage
Your Own Horse” at clinics in the Topeka area this spring.
This day-clinic is designed to teach the horse owner basic equine massage principles for application on their own horses. Participants will learn about massage therapy, how it works, why it works, basic massage strokes, common problem areas, and simple routines. Emphasis is on simplicity, safety, and improvement of equine well being. This is not a course meant to teach one how to massage horses for a business. It is for those wishing to enhance their own horses' well-being, improve their bond with their horses, and to learn more about equine massage therapy's benefits.
The course is one day, approximately 6-7 hours long. Participants will be required to bring their own horse (with current health papers and coggins required!!). Lunch will be served and is included in the clinic fee. Clinic is limited to 10 participants, no auditors allowed.
Next clinic will be June 13th. The clinics will be held at Duane Corkill’s awesome new equine facility, west of Topeka, 9-4 each day. Fee will be $89 per person. Call Jackie (785) 636-5446 or (785) 770-7017 or email at AlternativeEquine@hotmail.com. Visit www.alternativeequine.com for more info.
Jackie has scheduled a 5-day massage certification class, June 27 - July 1.
Call or email for more info or to enroll.
