April Showers? Stay Western Dry!

“A cold and moist April fills the cellar and fattens the cow."    – Old Farmers Alamac

Muck Boots are the perfect wet weather boot – comfortable, warm, light weight and will stay on when it gets really deep! Muck boots come in many different styles and heights. I love the
“Garden Shoe” to slip on for every day chores when it is damp out. The Mid-tack is my pick for the deep stuff. They have styles with heels for riding as well. If you don’t have a pair – it is
time to get one – they last forever!

Outback Packable Rain Coats come in both long and short lengths and are lightweight, breathable. These jackets are perfect for dress or to ride in and are can be monogrammed for awards.
Turn them inside out into the self-contained backpack to carry with you – perfect to take on a cruise or pack behind your saddle on a trail ride. Keep one in your trailer just in case a Kansas
thunderstorm pops up! Outback also makes rain pants.

Roy Frey Western also carries the Australian style oilskin dusters, liners, conditioner and hats.

Don’t forget to get a plastic hat cover to keep in your glove compartment to slip on your felt hat in case it starts to rain. If you do get your felt hat wet, just let it dry and bring it in to Mike and
Dewayne to clean and reshape. Don’t do anything while it is wet to damage the fibers.

Fun Fact for April
“The famous American actor John Wayne presented Queen Elizabeth II with the saddle he used in the making of the film, The Alamo.”
~ 1000 Facts on Horses by Marion Curry, Barnes & Noble Books.

Quote for April
"Cowgirl is an attitude, really. A pioneer spirit, a special American brand of courage. The cowgirl faces life head on, lives by her own lights, and makes no excuses. Cowgirls take
stands. They speak up. They defend the things they hold dear. A cowgirl might be a rancher, or a barrel racer, or a bull rider, or an actress. But she's just as likely to be a checker
at the local Winn Dixie, a full-time mother, a banker, an attorney, or an astronaut."

~ Dale Evans Rogers, Los Angeles, 1992

Liz’s Trail Corner
We’ve all heard the stories – an experienced rider and a dependable horse have an accident. It could be a major spook; an encounter with wildlife or maybe a saddle slid sideways. Whatever
the reason, when horse and rider part company, injuries can happen. We all know that if we ride long enough we might be thrown. Helmets are a smart pick for headgear every ride every time.
“When you’re young and you fall off a horse, you may break something. When you’re my age, you splatter.”
~ Roy Rogers

English riders are using them with great frequency and if you’re training a youngster or getting used to a new horse, they are mandatory.

Dr. Robert Miller, DVM (of imprinting fame) stated that he thought helmets were for other folks until he went trail riding with a good friend who was wearing a helmet. Miller made a comment
to his friend and was told that the friend was using a helmet because he was on a blood thinning medication and didn’t want to risk a head injury. Miller thought to himself realizing that he too
was on that type of medication. Since that ride Dr. Robert Miller, has become a helmet advocate.

At Roy Frey Western, we have a good selection of helmets for your riding experience be it training, trail riding, lessons, or pure pleasure riding. Helmets are a smart choice every ride, every time.

Donate Old Cowboy Boots to Winding River Girl Scouts
Winding River Camp & Equestrian Center, Dearborn, MO is in need of “well loved” and in good condition cowboy boots. Many of the 2nd – 8th grade girls may only get the opportunity
to come to Winding River once a year. They often do not have boots or helmets so Winding River provides them. This has become quite a challenge as well over a 1,000 young girls come
to Winding River for the Spring and Fall Program. We would welcome all sizes of used boots. Roy Frey Western in Topeka and Y Bar H in Olathe has offered to serve as drop off locations.
If you would like more information about Winding River you can go to: www.theranchatloneoak.com or contact Linda Grimmett (816) 914-0490.

“Massage Your Own Horse” Clinics
Jacqueline Wilt, R.N., C.E.M.T. will be teaching horse owners how to “Massage Your Own Horse” at clinics in the Topeka area this spring.

This day-clinic is designed to teach the horse owner basic equine massage principles for application on their own horses. Participants will learn about massage therapy, how it works, why it works, basic massage strokes, common problem areas, and simple routines. Emphasis is on simplicity, safety, and improvement of equine well being. This is not a course meant to teach one how to massage horses for a business. It is for those wishing to enhance their own horses' well-being, improve their bond with their horses, and to learn more about equine massage therapy's benefits.

The course is one day, approximately 6-7 hours long. Participants will be required to bring their own horse (with current health papers and coggins required!!). Lunch will be served and is included in the clinic fee. Clinic is limited to 10 participants, no auditors allowed.

Dates are: May 23, and June 13. The clinics will be held at Duane Corkill’s awesome new equine facility, west of Topeka, 9-4 each day. Fee will be $89 per person. Call Jackie (785) 636-5446 or (785) 770-7017 or email at AlternativeEquine@hotmail.com. Visit www.alternativeequine.com for more info.

Additionally, Jackie has scheduled two 5-day massage certification classes, April 18-22 and June 27 - July 1. Call or email for more info or to enroll.

Wright Flight Trail Ride May 24th
Come ride the beautiful prairies of Eisenhower State Park, surrounding Melvern Lake, Lyndon, KS on the third annual Wright Flight Trail Ride “Helping Kids Reach New Heights” Sunday, May 24th. The trail ride will consist of a leisurely 2-3 hour ride, and will be followed by a catered barbecued pork dinner, which will include door prize drawings, a silent auction and a spirited live auction featuring lots of wonderful items including Ariat, Tony Lama, Road Wolf, Muck and Old West boots, Wall Jackets, Petrol Jeans, Cowboy Magic Products, and a spot for two riders on the Purina/Better Horses Network Fall Dream Ride!

Wright Flight, Inc. (www.WrightFlight.org) is named after the Wright brothers. Our mission is to use the inherent motivational power of aviation as a stimulus for students to set and achieve higher goals in their educational and personal development. We teach students, grades 6-12, that through commitment and hard work they can achieve the highest goals, including the opportunity to pilot a light aircraft.

Wright Flight, Inc. stresses the importance of education by requiring each student to sign a contract before beginning the program. This contract requires the students to raise a grade point in one of their weaker subjects (i.e. raising a math grade from C to B), in addition to staying in school, off drugs, and out of gangs. If this requirement is not met, even though the student passes the Wright Flight "History of Flight" test, the child is not allowed to participate in the graduation. Once that requirement is met, then the student may experience the graduation thrill of a hands-on flight in a small aircraft as a co-pilot.

The goal for this trail ride is to help raise money to offset the fuel costs accumulated by the pilots volunteering their aircraft, time and money for these flights. In 2007, volunteer pilots flew 124 kids from six different schools. 100% of all donations for putting on the event and funds raised at the event go directly to the Kansas/Missouri Wright Flight Chapter. This event is sponsored by Heritage Tractor, Eisenhower State Park, Better Horses Network, Purina, Osage County Economic Development, Black Eye BBQ and Roy Frey Western. Additional support from individuals and corporations would be greatly appreciated and welcomed.

The Wright Flight Program is a non-profit organization. Dewayne Burgess, a retired Air Force fighter pilot, and owner of Roy Frey Western in Topeka, KS, founded the original Kansas Chapter in 1997. He later encouraged friends in Missouri to establish a chapter and currently serves as President of the recently combined Kansas/Missouri Chapter.

Registration begins at 9:30 am on Sunday, May 24, 2009. Ride is from 11 am to 2 pm. Dinner and silent and live auction is immediately following the ride. Cost is $35 for ride and dinner; $15 for dinner and auction. Pre-register by April 30, 2009 to win Purina Feed from Heritage Tractor. Ride is limited to first 100 riders. Camping reservations can be made through Eisenhower State Park at 785-528-4102. This event will be held rain or shine.

For more information or to register for the trail ride, contact Dewayne or Jo at 785-232-0579. The new web site www.WrightFlightTrailRide.com is operational, (a big thank you to Carla Cook, CJ Designs, Lee’s Summit, MO for this), so you can download the registration forms. Thank you in advance for your support of this wonderful program!
