An Old Cowboy's Advice
Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong.

Keep skunks and bankers and lawyers at a distance.

Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.

A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.

Words that soak into your ears are whispered...not yelled.

Meanness don't jes' happen overnight.

Forgive your enemies. It messes up their heads.

Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you.

It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge.

You cannot unsay a cruel word.

Every path has a few puddles.

When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.

The best sermons are lived, not preached.

Most of the stuff people worry about ain't never gonna happen anyway.

Don't judge folks by their relatives.

Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time.

Don't interfere with somethin' that ain't botherin' you none.

Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.

If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'.

Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got.

The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every mornin'.

Always drink upstream from the herd.

Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.

Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin' it back in.

If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around.

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

Quote for February

Riding a horse is not a gentle hobby, to be picked up and laid down like a game of solitaire. It is a grand passion.
It seizes a person whole and, once it has done so, he will have to accept that his life will be radically changed."
                                                                                                                    - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Liz's Trail Corner
We all appreciate a well-kept trail, but how many of us have volunteered at our favorite trail site to keep it that way? If you have a favorite trail destination why not volunteer some of your time to its upkeep. Spring is just around the corner and everyone will want to get out and enjoy the trails so why not organize some of your riding pals and volunteer for some trail maintenance before the redbud blooms?

Please check the list of trail coordinators on the Kansas Horse Council website www.kansashorsecouncil.com and offer your assistance to improve and maintain equestrian trails. Without volunteers, we will lose our privilege to ride these trails. Kansas has less than 2% public lands and equestrian trails are a very small part. The Kansas Horse Council web site has a complete list of equine trails and access to web sites for camping, trail maps and other information. Watch for the new "Equestrian Trails in Kansas" printed guide coming out soon from the Kansas Horse Council.

After having the winter off many of our horses and riders too could use some skill building --there are several very good clinics being offered in our vicinity. Check out the dates on the Roy Frey Western calendar of events www.royfreywestern.com. Even with tight budgets auditing one can be a good option.

What's Cooking? - At Roy Frey Western Lifestyles
Super Bowl Sunday had me thinking about some of my favorite appetizers. These are great snacks to take on trail rides:

Dried Beef Roll-ups
¼ lb. Dried beef slices (2 packages)
1 8-oz pkg cream cheese
3 T Rhine or white wine (optional)
Dash Worchestershire sauce
½ tsp onion, grated
1 T mayonnaise
2 tsp prepared horseradish, drained

Combine all ingredients except dried beef. Spread a thin layer of mixture on each dried beef slice, then roll up jelly roll style. This is a great finger food that can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated or frozen. Accompany with green or black olives on the side.

Cheese-Coated Grapes
1 8-oz pkg cream cheese
1 4-oz blue cheese
1 lb seedless red grapes
2 pkgs sliced almonds (5.5 oz each) crushed

Wash grapes and dry with paper towel. Microwave cream cheese and blue cheese for 1-3 seconds or until just soft. Roll grapes in cheese mixture and then in crushed almonds. Chill in refrigerator. Makes about 50.

"Massage Your Own Horse" Clinics

Jacqueline Wilt, R.N., C.E.M.T. will be teaching horse owners how to "Massage Your Own Horse" at clinics in the Topeka area this spring.

This day-clinic is designed to teach the horse owner basic equine massage principles for application on their own horses. Participants will learn about massage therapy, how it works, why it works, basic massage strokes, common problem areas, and simple routines. Emphasis is on simplicity, safety, and improvement of equine well being. This is not a course meant to teach one how to massage horses for a business. It is for those wishing to enhance their own horses' well-being, improve their bond with their horses, and to learn more about equine massage therapy's benefits.

The course is one day, approximately 6-7 hours long. Participants will be required to bring their own horse (with current health papers and coggins required!!). Lunch will be served and is included in the clinic fee. Clinic is limited to 10 participants, no auditors allowed.

Dates are: March 21, April 4, May 23, and June 13. The clinics will be held at Duane Corkill's awesome new equine facility, west of Topeka, 9-4 each day. Fee will be $89 per person. Call Jackie (785) 636-5446 or (785) 770-7017 or email at AlternativeEquine@hotmail.com. Visit www.alternativeequine.com for more info.

Additionally, Jackie has scheduled two 5-day massage certification classes, April 18-22 and June 27 - July 1. Call or email for more info or to enroll.

Julie Goodnight Horsemanship Clinic
RFD TV's Julie Goodnight is coming to Rocking V Equine Center, Wakarusa, KS April 18-19, 9am-5pm. $400 to ride both days - hurry - only one spot left. Come audit for only $25/Day. To register call Brenda Beach at 800-225-8827 or online at www.juliegoodnight.com.

Julie's clear and gentle horsemanship techniques will help you accomplish most any riding goal - no matter your prior horse experience or age. Her varied background in dressage, jumping, racing, reining, and wilderness riding helps Julie communicate clearly with all types of riders. She will help you become the leader and rider your horse deserves. Join her by watching or riding in this clinic - you will build confidence and develop the ultimate relationship with your horse.

Come meet Julie at a book signing event at Roy Frey Western, Friday, April 17th (time to be announced later).
