Thanksgiving Western Style
The Thanksgiving table is a place where friends and family gather to
celebrate the bounties of the season. Make it memorable with a western touch
this year. If you are like me, you have an eclectic set of dishes that is
targeted for the next garage sale, but never makes it to the door. It is
time - time to update your look with a new western set of dishware,
silverware, glassware and table linens. Choose from one of the six different
styles of dishware offered at Roy Frey Western: Brands, Texas Star, Barbwire
(tan background), Old West, Buckaroo and Barbwire (cream background). Add
coordinating accessories such as table runners, placemats, chargers,
napkins, napkin rings, steak knives, cutting boards and wine holders to
complete the look. Come take a look at our home décor department and let us
help you achieve your special look.
Below is the new Texas Star Dishware pattern – stoneware in blue with brown
star accents – it is sooo cool! Looks great with cowhide and copper
chargers! Comes in a 16 piece setting. Place under a copper charger and on
top of a cowhide placement with leather handled silverware, longhorns and
stars glassware, and a beautiful horn floral center piece and you have
western tablescape that would make Martha Stewart envious!

I sat next to a lady on my flight home from Jackson Hole and she saw I was carrying an American West purse. She then raved about her American West brief case that her father had given her when she graduated from college. She had worn the carrying strap just about off and sent it back to American West to be replaced. They couldn’t fix it, so they called to see if it would be OK to send her a new one! How’s that for customer service!

Fall Cowgirl Camp
Just came back from a fabulous fall cowgirl get together in the Flint Hills
at the Bar U Ranch, Hymer, KS hosted by B. Rex Buchman. Rex helped us
cowgirls improve our horsemanship with mini-clinics as we trail rode thru
the beautiful Flint Hills pastures. We were treated to lessons on working
cattle on Sunday. Breakfast and lunches were catered by Gwen Hoy, Flying W
www.flinthillsflyingw.com. Marty Tadtman was gracious enough to invite the
group to her wonderful western store, Jim Bell & Son,
www.jimbellandson.com, Saturday
night for some retail therapy and refreshments! Following our visit to Jim
Bell's, we went across the street to listen to Judy Coder and "Cowgirl
Swing" for some wonderful western music at the Emma Chase Café. Judy and her
cowgirl band rode with us as well! www.judycoder.com It just doesn’t get any
better than riding, learning, eating, shopping, western music and good
friends for a cowgirl week-end!
![]() |
If anyone wants to hire Rex for their own personal “Cowgirl or Cowboy” weekend, contact him at 620-794-5332 or e-mail brbuchman@gmail.com. He can tailor a day or a week-end to accommodate your riding adventure complete with riding lesson and rental horses. Rex is also starting colts so book your time slot now!
Turpin Meadow Ranch Elk Hunt
In keeping with our practice of sharing information on fun things and nice
folks we run across while pursuing the western life style, we want to tell
you about a recent elk hunt and riding adventure in Wyoming we enjoyed with
friends Nile and Kate Fowler. Nile and I drew Wyoming non-resident elk
permits for the 2009 season and came up with a plan to not only hunt elk but
to let Jo and Kate enjoy the experience as well. We looked for a guest ranch
which offered comfortable accommodations, guided horseback hunts and trail
riding. We settled on Turpin Meadow Ranch near Moran, Wyoming. Turpin Meadow
is located in the Jackson Hole Valley about 45 minutes northeast of Jackson.
Whether you want to hunt, fish, hike, snowmobile, trail ride or do a pack
trip, Turpin Meadow Ranch can create an experience you won’t soon forget!
The country is spectacular, the staff is professional, fun and friendly and
the food is terrific! Check out their website at
www.turpinmeadowranch.com for more details.
While at the ranch, one of Nile’s guides was Randy George. In addition to guiding hunters, Randy builds saddles with his father, Dennis, at G Bar G Saddles in Riverton, WY. Some of you may have visited their booth at the NFR or one of the High School Rodeo National Finals events. For some real cowboy eye candy, visit their website at www.gbargsaddles.com and have a look at some of the custom saddles on display. I looked at a no frills hunting saddle Randy had built for himself and I can personally vouch for G Bar G quality.
So, how was the hunting and the riding you ask? Both were great! Nile and I were each successful and Jo and Kate enjoyed fabulous trail rides through spectacular country, dotted with brilliantly colored aspens, contrasted with beautiful green pines. Icing on the cake included a day tour to Yellowstone National Park with one of Turpin’s expert tour guides.
For the hunters reading this, Turpin Meadow Ranch has a terrific hunter
success rate. There were three elk hunters in camp the week of our hunt and
each of us tagged a bull. Nile took a 6 x 6 and the other hunter and I each
took a 5 x 5. If my memory serves me correctly, my guide had three bull elk
and two mule deer bucks to his credit already in his first solo season as a
guide. Turpin Meadow Ranch is reasonably priced and very flexible and happy
to accommodate most any request imaginable.
What I personally enjoyed most was the opportunity to combine two things I
love….hunting and riding. If you enjoy these activities and are looking for
a special place, give Turpin Meadow Ranch a try. You won’t be sorry!

Weather Lore for November
• A heavy November snow will last
until April.
• Thunder in November, a fertile year
to come.
• Flowers in bloom late in autumn
indicate a bad winter.
Quote for November
"When you have confidence you
can have a lot of fun! And when you have fun, you can do some amazing
things."
--Joe Namath
After watching the Extreme Cowboy
Race World Championship this past week-end at the Kansas ExpoCentre, this
quote came to light
and is amazingly true! What a fun
event to watch. Congratulations to everyone who competed!
Liz’s Trail Corner – November Trail
Tip
Preventing Snowball Feet--use a coating of petroleum jelly on the sole of
your horse's hooves to prevent snow from packing. Please be advised that you
may have to repeat this process for it to be effective. Unshod horses have
far fewer problems with snow packing.
Clean up your bits and spurs in the dishwasher. Bits with moving parts
can be lubricated with a drop of olive or vegetable oil.
Tarnish Free--mix vinegar and salt to clean brass fittings on bridles and
other tack. 1 teaspoon salt to 1 cup vinegar.
It's always a good time to check your tack for wear and tear and to repair or replace worn-out pieces. A "Farmer's Bundle" of bits and pieces of leather is handy to have to make repairs.
Clean, condition and protect your leather tack with Skidmore Leather
Conditioner. It is great on anything leather including couches, car seats
and boots. Winter is a perfect time to get your tack renewed for the spring
rides.
On the web--a new site which is still under construction will be of great
interest to trail riders. Trail Town USA at
www.trailtownusa.com will have
articles about training topics, breeds, equipment, safety issues and reviews
of great places to ride. Take a look.

What’s
Cooking? - At Roy Frey Western Lifestyles |
The following are Thanksgiving Recipes from Marilyn Domer, Roy Frey
Western, Store Designer. Marilyn cooked this delicious meal for the RFW
staff and
we can all attest to how good it is!
Cowboy Rock Salt Prime Rib
Sometimes, a recipe just sounds so bizarre that you just have to try it.
Here is my all time favorite one.
1 Prime Rib Roast (4 to 12 pounds depending on the number of guests)
2 to 3 boxes of Kosher Rock Salt
Combine enough Rosemary, Thyme and Ginger to make a rub that will lightly
cover the roast.
Roasting beef in rock salt is an impressive, yet easy way to produce a
moist, evenly cooked roast beef. Covering the roast in this fashion
insulates the meat
but does not give it a salty flavor.
Start with a Beef Rib Eye Roast. It should weigh between 4 and 12 pounds.
Be certain there is no more than ¼ inch layer of fat on the roast. Trim as
necessary. Season with herbs and spices as desired.
Use a deep metal roasting pan not too much larger than the roast. Completely cover the bottom of the pan with rock salt ½ inch deep.
Place roast on top of salt and insert meat thermometer into center of roast. Completely cover roast with additional rock salt.
Place roast in 425o oven and cook 16 to 18 minutes per pound
for rare (140 degrees F), 20 to 22 minutes per pound for medium rare (160o
F), or 25
to 30 minutes per pound for well done (170o F). Remove roast when
the thermometer registers 5 degrees F below the desired doneness. Cooking
the
prime rib beyond medium rare is a waste of a superior cut of beef.
Let stand 5 to 10 minutes in the rock salt before carving.
Remove roast from rock salt. (If the salt has hardened, you may need to crack it with a hammer.) Brush off all crystals, carve, serve - and enjoy.
Candied Sweet Potatoes With a Twist
2 Pounds Sweet Potatoes or Yams (about 6 medium)
½ Cup Packed Brown Sugar
3 Tablespoons Margarine
½ Teaspoon Salt
1 8 ¼ Ounce Can of Crushed Pineapple
Peel potatoes, cut into ½ inch size cubes, boil in salted water for 30
minutes on the stove top or microwave for about 15 minutes. This stage could
be
done the day before. Just refrigerate overnight. And then follow the rest of
the recipe. Or for more time saving substitute 1 (17 ounce) can of vacuum-
packed sweet potatoes.
Mix sugar, margarine, and salt together. Cook over medium heat, stirring
constantly, until smooth and bubbly. Add pineapple and cooked sweet
potatoes.
4 to 6 servings
10 Minute Start to Finish Green Beans
These can be made in the amount of time that it takes to let your prime rib
stand before carving.
2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
1 Large Sweet Onion, Diced
2 Teaspoons of Minced Garlic
1/3 Cup of Slivered Almonds
3 14.5 ounce Cans of French-Style Green Beans, drained
Salt and Pepper to taste
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Pour in olive oil, then mix in onion, garlic, and almonds. Saute until onions are translucent, about 5 minutes.
Stir in green beans and season with salt and pepper. Cover skillet with lid and cook for 3 minutes, stirring a few times so mixture doesn’t burn.
Quick and Easy Stuffing
1 Stick of Butter
½ Large Onion, Chopped
1 16 oz. Bag of Pepperidge Farm Seasoned Stuffing Mix
2 14 oz. Cans of Chicken Broth
1 Cup Chopped Pecans
Melt butter in a sauce pan, sauté onions in butter. Add remaining
ingredients and stir until all stuffing mix is moist. Bake in 9 x 11 x 2
dish uncovered
for 10 minutes at 275o F.
Strawberry Pretzel Salad
This recipe seems complicated however each layer can be prepared in five
minutes.
Layer 1:
2 Cups Pretzels, broken into peanut size pieces
½ Cup Sugar
¾ Cup Melted Butter
Layer 2:
2 8 oz. Packages of Cream Cheese, Softened
1 Cup Sugar
1 12 oz. Container of Cool Whip Lite
Layer 3:
2 3 oz. Packages of Strawberry Jello
Not quite 2 Cups of Boiling Water
2 10 oz. Packages of Frozen Strawberries (with juice)
Mix first layer. Press in bottom of 9 x 13 x 2 inch pan. Bake at 350o
F for 8 minutes. Let cool. Mix second layer and spread on top of
pretzel mixture.
For the third layer, put boiling water in Jello: mix well. Add frozen
berries; stir. Cool until jelly-like. Spread on top of second layer.
Refrigerate overnight.
Bonnie’s Pumpkin Pie Cake
This is faster and easier than making pumpkin pie, plus it will feed more
people.
1 13 ounce Can Evaporated Milk
6 eggs
3 Cups Pumpkin
1 Cup Sugar
½ Cup Brown Sugar
2 Tsp. Cinnamon
1 Tsp. Ginger
¼ Tsp. Cloves
1 Yellow Cake Mix
½ Cup Butter
1 Cup Chopped Pecans
Stir together milk, eggs, pumpkin, sugar, brown sugar and spices. Pour
mixture into 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan. Blend cake mix and butter with fork until
mixture resembles oatmeal. Sprinkle over pumpkin; top with chopped pecans.
Bake at 325o F for 1 hour or until knife inserted in center comes
out clean.
Cool; cut into squares to serve. Refrigerate leftovers.
“Bonnie” is Bonnie McNorton, the chief cook and bottle washer in the North Topeka Saddle Club concession stand. Bonnie is a very special person!
Horse Sugar Cookies
1 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Powdered Sugar
1 Cup Margarine
1 Cup Cooking Oil
2 Eggs
5 Cups Flour
1 Tsp. Baking Soda
1 Tsp. Salt
1 Tsp. Cream of Tartar
1 Tsp. Mexican Vanilla
1 Can of Vanilla Frosting
Combine sugars, margarine and oil. Beat well. Add eggs and beat. Add remaining ingredients.
Refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours.
Roll dough, cut into horse shapes.
Bake 10 minutes for 375o F
Mix vanilla frosting with red and green food coloring. Place colored
frosting in ziplock baggies with small opening in the corner just large
enough to
squeeze the frosting out.
Grab the kids and frost away. This is the only recipe that takes time,
but it makes the kids feel like they have had a part in preparing the
dinner.
Hopefully, it will become a tradition that they will look back on fondly.
KCPD Mounted Patrol Needs 2 Good
Geldings
The Kansas City Missouri Mounted Patrol is looking for 2 geldings, 6-18
years of age, at least 15.2 hands, good conformation, good temperament, well
trained and overall sound.
Donated horses are accepted for a 90 day trial period. If the horse passes the trial period he would then become the property of the Board of Police Commissioners. Horses that do not pass will be returned to the donating party. If the decision is made to retire a police horse at any time, the original owner would then be contacted to accept return of the horse if they so chose. Visit www.kcmountedpatrol.org for more information or contact Sgt. Joey Roberts at 816-363-1824.
Donate Old Cowboy Boots to Winding
River Girl Scouts
Winding River Camp & Equestrian Center, Dearborn, MO is in need of “well
loved” and in good condition cowboy boots. Many of the 2nd – 8th grade girls
may only get the opportunity to come to Winding River once a year. They
often do not have boots or helmets so Winding River provides them. This has
become quite a challenge as well over a 1,000 young girls come to Winding
River for the Spring and Fall Program. We would welcome all sizes of used
boots. Roy Frey Western in Topeka and Y Bar H in Olathe has offered to serve
as drop off locations. If you would like more information about Winding
River you can go to:
www.theranchatloneoak.com or contact Linda Grimmett (816) 914-0490.
