Kachina
Pony and For Spacious Skies – two of the new Summer releases
From http://www.trailofpaintedponies.com/fm-new-ponies.htm
By Popular Demand - That's how we are describing the latest release of eight
new Painted Ponies figurines because the selections were made in response to a
question in the Gallop Poll: What are your favorite Painted Pony designs? Most
of you said you liked Native Ponies best. In second place was Western, and
then came Patriotic Ponies.
With this in mind, the Summer 2008 release consists of four Native Ponies,
three Western Ponies and one Patriotic Pony.
A range of expressions can be found in the Native Ponies. Two of the Ponies -
"Wounded Knee" and "Runs the Bitterroot" - are moving tributes to tragic
events in tribal history. "Sundancer" captures the essence of a powerful
ceremony that was believed by Plains Indians to restore their early glory, and
"Kachina Pony" wonderfully represents a Native spirit of hopefulness. Since
the start of The Trail, Native America has been a rich source of creativity
which is continued with this release.
Roy Frey Western has a standing order for all new release (first edition)
Painted Ponies. Stop by today and add to your collection. Painted Ponies are
great gifts!

New Western Books
Bob Fudge, Texas Trail Driver, Montana Wyoming Cowboy 1862-1933
This is a great book by Jim Russell. I couldn’t put it down. The stories he tells about roping wolves and swimming rivers were unbelievable and fascinating. It is just facts, no fluff or fancy words describing the hard, but interesting life and times Bob Fudge lived driving herds of horses and cattle from Texas to Montana during the day of the open range. I highly recommend it for anyone, any age to read. I am so glad that we have authors like Jim Russell and Bob Sullivan (Camp Coffee: Tales of a Wyoming Cowboy) who took the time and put forth the effort to preserve the history and lives of these remarkable cowboys who touched so many lives.
John Wayne – A Western Celebration – This is very large, colorful coffee table book filled with wonderful pictures and recounts each of the western movies that John Wayne starred in. A synopsis of the film accompanies each poster and rekindles our memories of hours of entertainment watching John Wayne ride across the silver screen. Quotes from the movie are also included. This is a great birthday or Christmas present for the John Wayne fan!
From the movie “Big Jake”, a quote from Jacob McCandles (John
Wayne):
“You’re short on ears and long on mouth!”
Montana Silversmith Cowboy Kickers
Come try on a pair of the fun and warm “Cowboy Kickers” from Montana
Silversmiths! Give yourself “happy feet”! Perfect gift ideas for Christmas
presents for your friends and family.

AHC Publishes Horse Industry Guide to Getting Involved in the
2008 Elections
The American Horse Council has released "Getting Involved in
the 2008 Elections," a federal election guide for the horse industry. The
guide stemmed from the program at the AHC's National Issues Forum in
Washington explaining how the horse industry could take advantage of the 2008
federal elections to get more involved with their elected representatives.
The 2008 elections are a great opportunity for horse
associations, businesses and individuals to step up and be heard by the
candidates, incumbents and those running for the first time. Candidates for
office want to hear from voters, they want your help and most of all they want
your votes. 2008 is an opportunity to educate them about the issues important
to the horse community and show them our votes are important. The AHC 2008
election guide explains how to do this.
The AHC encourages member organizations to distribute
information for obtaining the guide to their state and local affiliates to
help ensure the voice of the horse industry is heard this election.
The guide discusses why the horse industry should get involved
in the upcoming elections and ways individuals and organizations can go about
doing so. It includes sections on why candidates care about the horse
community, being able to communicate issues of importance to the horse
industry, getting to know the candidates, volunteering and fundraising, as
well as knowing the laws governing political activities.
The AHC hopes this guide will be an important resource for all
members of the horse community who wish to play a greater role in the
democratic process.

Cashel specialty trail packs and saddle accessories, EZ-Up Stirrup Extenders,
and Stirrup Swivels. Please don’t forget your helmet; we have a complete stock
of Troxel Helmets. Get outfitted in new trail riding apparel including jeans,
belts, jackets, hats and boots, too! These items will make trail riding more
enjoyable for you and your horse on the trail and in the camp. If there is a
special item that you have been looking for be sure to tell us about it.
Dewayne and I have been riding with the Thinline pads and we can really tell the difference in the feel of the saddle seat – it’s much softer. If you have back problems or your horse gets sore, you might give a Thinline Pad a try.
Liz’s Trail Tips: Riding During Hunting Season —
With the approach of hunting season it is very important for trail riders to be familiar with the hunting policy in the area where you are riding. Just as riders are enthusiastic about their trail riding; hunters are also eager to "get out there".
When riding on private property or public trails make sure that you know if hunting is allowed and familiarize yourself with the various seasons. Just like the hunter's safety orange cap, jacket or vest you can deck yourself out in orange. Some hunter's safety orange tack is available for your horse too. Dress to be seen by all, and be familiar with land usage policies.

New Lucky Bucky “Tree Hugger” Tee Shirt
![]() |
The original idea for the shirt "My Horse is a Tree Hugger -
Leave Only Kneecaps Behind" shirt was based on Donna Taylor’s (owner &
designer of Lucky Bucky tee shirts) own experiences trail riding in the woods.
She wanted something to remind riders to help take care of our trails (don't
leave trash, junk, etc. on the trail - only kneecaps). "Kneecaps" is in
reference to sometimes when riding, the trail is so narrow that you can bump
your kneecaps on trees if not careful.
Donna became aware of the STEP (Stewards for Trails, Education and Partnerships) program from Mardell Smith of the Kentucky Quarter Horse Association and thought the program would be a natural tie-in and a way to help promote STEP and the shirt. The cute tee shirt is intended to create rider AWEARNESS about the STEP program and to encourage people to learn more about what they can do to help preserve and maintain riding trails in America.
Roy Frey Western has the new “Tree Hugger” tee shirts in stock.

| Women and Horses Event to be Held in Sedalia |
![]() |
A three-day event will be held Oct. 24-26 in Sedalia, MO that
is geared toward women involved in the horse industry. The event is a
celebration of Women and Horses. It is aimed at horsewomen, whether they are
first-time horse owners, long-time horse owners, horse enthusiasts,
professional horsewomen or horse-related business owners.
The concept for this event came out of the Women and Horses
Mind, Spirit and Body seminars that are conducted by Cheryl Childs and her
staff. The seminars deal with assisting women in overcoming fears and bad
experiences that may be stopping them from enjoying their horses.
“It’s about how women relate differently to their horses, and
to problems with their horses, than most men do, Childs explained. Out of that
came the concept for an event aimed at horsewomen. “
Women are just going crazy over this event said Childs, owner
of New Visions Marketing & Promotions, an equine advertising/marketing
business that is co-producing the event. We are getting calls from all over
the country from women wanting to attend, participate and be vendors, she
said. We have had women call and say they heard about the event while they
were riding with friends.
It appears that horsewomen are willing to support this event in every way they can whether it’s attending, participating in breed or discipline demonstrations, being vendors, presenting, or lecturing. Women represent 80 percent of the market and want to be recognized as the driving force in the horse industry by companies that they patronize.
Along with a trade show featuring the latest and most
innovative products for horses and their owners, there will be breed
demonstrations, a stallion showcase, stallion parades, and a daily parade of
breeds. An Equine Art contest and a Women and Horses Stall of Fame honoring
horsewomen and their accomplishments are being planned for the run of the
expo. There will be a host of speakers and lecturers presenting a wide variety
of topics.
Julie Goodnight, of RFD-TV’s Horse Master television show,
will be presenting several times during the event. Singer/songwriter Templeton
Thompson will perform with her horse Jane. Imagine a Horse will entertain and
inform with enlightened trick training. Cheryl Childs of Women and Horses,
Mind, Spirit and body will speak during the event. Claudia Misner, who is a
German trained dressage rider and judge, will perform dressage demonstrations
at beginner and advanced levels and Lyn Walker of Lynwood Equine will be
joined by other guest speakers. Gary Norris of Quarter Ridge Trailers will
present Trailer Safety and Backing demonstrations (men are welcome). The Royal
Friesians of Kansas City, an all-Friesian, all-woman drill team, will perform
daily.
Corporate sponsors for the event include 2010 World Equestrian Games sponsor Alltech, as well as Smartpak and Agrifresh, maker of an odor eliminator for horse stalls. Watch for more corporate sponsors in anticipation of the success of this event, and find more information at www.WomenandHorsesExpo.com.
Ultimate Horsemen’s
Challenge Association
Want To Have Some Fun? Come Ride With Us!
The Ultimate Horsemen’s Challenge Association (U.H.C.A.) invites you to come ride with us and have fun on horseback in 2008. The events will be similar to the Extreme Cowboy Race with the association providing a regional format with different ability level classes to encourage riders of all skill levels to become involved and sharpen their horsemanship skills.
The founding members of the U.H.C.A. come from both sides of the Missouri-Kansas state line. All are from a diverse background of horses and good horsemanship. The clinics and challenges (events) will be held on both sides of the Mo-Kan state line, however, competitors are welcome from anywhere.
Points for year end awards will be kept throughout the year. Riders need not make every event as points from an individual’s top five finishes will determine the teams (rider/horse) year end standings.
Each challenge will consist of four core classes: Youth 17 & under, Novice Amateur, Amateur and Open. Nominated members of the U.H.C.A. will have points kept by the association secretary for year end awards.
The U.H.C.A. invites you to come learn, ride and enjoy the challenges of the outdoor obstacle courses. We are dedicated to having fun, riding safe and enjoying fast-paced events for riders of any level.
There will be several professional training clinics offered throughout the year. These are designed to help horse and riders with any problems they might encounter and advance their training levels.

30 Horse & Rider Teams Compete for $6,000 in Cash Prizes
in Craig Cameron's Extreme Cowboy Race™ at EquiFest of Kansas!
WHAT IS THE EXTREME COWBOY RACE™? Craig Cameron will not only present
clinics at the 2008 EquiFest of Kansas in Wichita, Kansas, but he will conduct
his Extreme Cowboy Race™ each day at the event. The Extreme Cowboy Race™—as
seen on RFD-TV— is a timed and judged race through an obstacle course that is
designed not only to push horse and rider teams out of their traditional
“comfort zones,” but also to test communication between horse and rider and
the horsemanship skills and athletic abilities of each competitor. Spectators
will find the competition exciting and entertaining to watch while contenders
will address its challenges in a race for $6,000 in cash prizes, and the title
of “Extreme Cowboy Race Champion.”
A LITTLE BACKGROUND: The Extreme Cowboy Race™ was created by Ryan Dohrn of HorseCity.com along with Craig Cameron, who has designed and hosted three races at his Double Horn Ranch in Bluffdale, TX, since 2005. HorseCity.com decided to name the event the Extreme Cowboy Race™ to challenge typical reality TV shows with an infusion of horseback riding thrills. Each season Craig Cameron assembles an impressive roster of competitors from around the country who compete for the title of Extreme Cowboy Race Champion. The Extreme Cowboy Race™ spans 15, 30-minute episodes featuring horse and rider teams as they complete the various rounds of the race course. The Extreme Cowboy Race™ airs on RFD-TV and is also available on HorseCity.com for those who do not get RFD-TV.
THE EXTREME COWBOY RACE AT EQUIFEST OF KANSAS: Although the Extreme Cowboy Race™ at EquiFest of Kansas is not currently scheduled to be filmed for broadcast, the competition will include all of the same elements, excitement, and prizes associated with Craig Cameron’s televised productions in Texas. A maximum of 30 horse/rider teams will be selected by Mr. Cameron for participation in the race. The first 15 teams will compete Friday, February 13th with the remaining 15 teams competing Saturday, February 14th. The top ten horse and rider teams will advance to the Extreme Cowboy Race™ finals on Sunday, February 15, 2009.
THE RACE COURSE: The race course will be constructed within the parameters of the arena and will feature obstacles similar to those featured in previous races as well as several new obstacles designed specifically for the race at EquiFest of Kansas. The course is likely to include obstacles and activities such as: saddling the horse, dragging logs, jumping obstacles, loading into a trailer, backing up through a pattern, pole bending or roll backs, navigating a log jumble, penning cattle and working gates, conquering dirt terrain, crossing water obstacles, etc.
OBJECTIVES AND JUDGING: The Extreme Cowboy Race™ will be a timed event during which the performance of each horse and rider team will be judged on each obstacle for quality of horsemanship. Judges will award points on a scale of 1-10 for the horse and rider’s performance through each obstacle based on the following criteria: horsemanship, cadence, control, horse’s attitude, and overall execution. Horses and riders will be required to complete each obstacle within a given time in order to receive points. If an obstacle is not completed within the given timeframe, the contestant will be flagged and must move on to the next obstacle. Times will be translated into points, with the highest overall score winning the race.
ILLEGAL EQUIPMENT: Exhibitors will be disqualified for use of the following equipment: Mechanical Hackamores Tie Downs
PRIZES: Cash prizes will be awarded to the top four finishers. The first place team will receive $2,400 and the title of “Extreme Cowboy Race Champion”; the second place team will receive $1,800; the third place team will receive $1,200; and the fourth place team will receive $600. Prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the final phase of the race on Sunday.
HOW TO APPLY: The Extreme Cowboy Race™ will be open to all riders age 18 years and older and horses of all breeds. All horse and rider teams will compete against each other; there will be no “divisions” based on gender or age.
The entry fee for each horse/rider team is $350. Individual riders may compete with more than one horse in the race, but they must submit a separate application and fee for each horse they wish to enter in the race. Applications and videos will be received by EquiFest of Kansas and then forwarded to Craig Cameron who will select up to 30 competitors for the race. Applications should be submitted by December 10, 2008, in order to be included in the “first batch” of applications forwarded to Mr. Cameron for his review. Applications will be considered until 30 contestants are confirmed.
Once selections have been made, contestants will be notified by phone. Any applicants who are not selected will receive notification by mail along with their entry fee checks. Entry fees of accepted contestants will not be refundable.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT COMPETING IN THE EXTREME COWBOY RACE™ AT EQUIFEST OF KANSAS:
• Because of stall limits, each contestant will receive one stall for the weekend. Check into the stall office Thursday, February 12th from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm or Friday morning from 8:00 am – 9:00 am. If you need to make other arrangements for arrival you must call the office in advance as limited times are available for move-in once the event begins.
• One horse stall will be provided for each contestant in the race. Participants are responsible for bringing their own feed and bringing or purchasing their own bedding (no straw). Shavings will be available for purchase on site.
• The Extreme Cowboy Race™ at EquiFest of Kansas will offer a unique and exciting opportunity to test your horsemanship and compete for valuable prizes. However, applicants should be aware that the race will be conducted in a large arena where there are likely to be large crowds in attendance and activity surrounding the arena. While there will be an arena available on a limited basis for schooling and exercising horses, opportunities to warm up or practice in the race arena will not be available. If you and/or your horse cannot function well in such an environment, we cannot encourage you to apply.
• All horses brought to EquiFest of Kansas must be free of illness and infectious disease.
All horses must be accompanied by:
• a negative test result for equine infectious anemia (Coggins Test) dated
within 12 months of February 22, 2008
• A Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (health papers) dated within 30 days of February 15, 2009.
A veterinarian will be at the event, and horse owners will be required to present their horses’ health papers upon check-in at the Stall Office.
