We've got everything for ridin', ropin', rodeoin' Jeans, hats, and boots & tack for showin' We've got it all from tack to ties So cowboy up down at Roy Frey's!
Lucille Frey
It was with great sadness that we learned of the recent passing of Lucille Frey, founder and former owner of Roy Frey Western. We had the great privilege of knowing Lucille and what a wonderful lady she was. “Grandma” would call us at the store every now and then and tell us how pleased she was that we had kept the name and traditions she and Roy had started in the store. That meant a lot to us.
After purchasing the store, we experienced several strange happenings that we could only explain as the “ghost of Roy” at work in the store. When we opened the store in the morning, we would find boots lying on the floor. They had mysteriously jumped off the shelves during the night and had not set off the motion detector. We would also find the large picture of Roy hanging crooked on the wall. It was like an earthquake had taken place in the store. We moved Roy’s picture to several locations in the store and found he was happiest hanging back in the boot department, but still had to be straightened in the mornings.
A couple of years ago, Lucille called and asked if she could have the picture of Roy to hang in her room at Presbyterian Manor. We asked if we could make a copy of it so we’d continue to have Roy’s presence in the store and she agreed. The old frame fell apart when we took it off the wall. We re-glued it and gave the original picture and frame to Lucille. That stopped all the strange stuff for awhile. Now we occasionally find boots that have jumped off the shelves and we just smile and tip our hat to Roy when we pick them up and put them back. Roy’s “copied” picture hangs straight and never moves. Guess we finally have figured out that Roy wanted to be with Lucille just as much as she wanted him with her. I bet they had a great reunion in heaven this week.
I wonder if Lucille will come to visit us at the store? If so,
she’ll leave her calling cards in the office or sewing room. Dewayne hopes she
comes back and helps him pay the bills! Lucille touched a lot of lives, and we
are blessed to have been a small part of her life. She will be missed.

AHC Publishes Horse Industry Guide to Getting Involved in the 2008 Elections
The American Horse Council has released "Getting Involved in
the 2008 Elections," a federal election guide for the horse industry. The
guide stemmed from the program at the AHC's National Issues Forum in
Washington explaining how the horse industry could take advantage of the 2008
federal elections to get more involved with their elected representatives.
The 2008 elections are a great opportunity for horse
associations, businesses and individuals to step up and be heard by the
candidates, incumbents and those running for the first time. Candidates for
office want to hear from voters, they want your help and most of all they want
your votes. 2008 is an opportunity to educate them about the issues important
to the horse community and show them our votes are important. The AHC 2008
election guide explains how to do this.
The AHC encourages member organizations to distribute
information for obtaining the guide to their state and local affiliates to
help ensure the voice of the horse industry is heard this election.
The guide discusses why the horse industry should get involved
in the upcoming elections and ways individuals and organizations can go about
doing so. It includes sections on why candidates care about the horse
community, being able to communicate issues of importance to the horse
industry, getting to know the candidates, volunteering and fundraising, as
well as knowing the laws governing political activities.
The AHC hopes this guide will be an important resource for all
members of the horse community who wish to play a greater role in the
democratic process.

Liz’s Trail Tips: Crossing Deep Water Safety Tips—
![]() |
Did you know that a tie down or martingale (standing or
running) has the potential to cause serious problems when you are riding your horse through deeper water? Because of the restrictive action of tie downs and martingales, horses are unable to raise their heads sufficiently when crossing deep water. Worst case scenario would be the horse drowning because of the restrictive tack. Don't put yourself or your horse in jeopardy. Be aware and re-evaluate the use of tie downs and martingales. |
Safety on the Trails
Here’s a great safety video to watch for your protection when
trail riding or during any vulnerable time when you are alone with your horse.

New Lucky Bucky “Tree Hugger” Tee Shirt
![]() |
The original idea for the shirt "My Horse is a Tree Hugger -
Leave Only Kneecaps Behind" shirt was based on Donna Taylor’s (owner &
designer of Lucky Bucky tee shirts) own experiences trail riding in the woods.
She wanted something to remind riders to help take care of our trails (don't
leave trash, junk, etc. on the trail - only kneecaps). "Kneecaps" is in
reference to sometimes when riding, the trail is so narrow that you can bump
your kneecaps on trees if not careful.
Donna became aware of the STEP (Stewards for Trails, Education and Partnerships) program from Mardell Smith of the Kentucky Quarter Horse Association and thought the program would be a natural tie-in and a way to help promote STEP and the shirt. The cute tee shirt is intended to create rider AWEARNESS about the STEP program and to encourage people to learn more about what they can do to help preserve and maintain riding trails in America.
Roy Frey Western has the new “Tree Hugger” tee shirts in stock.

| Women and Horses Event to be Held in Sedalia |
![]() |
A three-day event will be held Oct. 24-26 in Sedalia, MO. that
is geared toward women involved in the horse industry. The event is a
celebration of Women and Horses. It is aimed at horsewomen, whether they are
first-time horse owners, long-time horse owners, horse enthusiasts,
professional horsewomen or horse-related business owners.
The concept for this event came out of the Women and Horses
Mind, Spirit and Body seminars that are conducted by Cheryl Childs and her
staff. The seminars deal with assisting women in overcoming fears and bad
experiences that may be stopping them from enjoying their horses.
“It’s about how women relate differently to their horses, and
to problems with their horses, than most men do, Childs explained. Out of that
came the concept for an event aimed at horsewomen. “
Women are just going crazy over this event said Childs, owner
of New Visions Marketing & Promotions, an equine advertising/marketing
business that is co-producing the event. We are getting calls from all over
the country from women wanting to attend, participate and be vendors, she
said. We have had women call and say they heard about the event while they
were riding with friends.
It appears that horsewomen are willing to support this event in every way they can whether it’s attending, participating in breed or discipline demonstrations, being vendors, presenting, or lecturing. Women represent 80 percent of the market and want to be recognized as the driving force in the horse industry by companies that they patronize.
Along with a trade show featuring the latest and most
innovative products for horses and their owners, there will be breed
demonstrations, a stallion showcase, stallion parades, and a daily parade of
breeds. An Equine Art contest and a Women and Horses Stall of Fame honoring
horsewomen and their accomplishments are being planned for the run of the
expo. There will be a host of speakers and lecturers presenting a wide variety
of topics.
Julie Goodnight, of RFD-TV’s Horse Master television show,
will be presenting several times during the event. Singer/songwriter Templeton
Thompson will perform with her horse Jane. Imagine a Horse will entertain and
inform with enlightened trick training. Cheryl Childs of Women and Horses,
Mind, Spirit and body will speak during the event. Claudia Misner, who is a
German trained dressage rider and judge, will perform dressage demonstrations
at beginner and advanced levels and Lyn Walker of Lynwood Equine will be
joined by other guest speakers. Gary Norris of Quarter Ridge Trailers will
present Trailer Safety and Backing demonstrations (men are welcome). The Royal
Friesians of Kansas City, an all-Friesian, all-woman drill team, will perform
daily.
Corporate sponsors for the event include 2010 World Equestrian Games sponsor Alltech, as well as Smartpak and Agrifresh, maker of an odor eliminator for horse stalls. Watch for more corporate sponsors in anticipation of the success of this event, and find more information at www. WomenandHorsesExpo.com.

What’s Cooking? - At Roy Frey Western Lifestyles
In honor of Lucille Frey, I would like to share her very special “Strawberry Pie” recipe that she was famous for making for her family and friends. This is a simple pie to make that is delicious and will be requested time and time again.
Lucille’s Strawberry Pie
1 pkg frozen strawberries – large size – thawed
½ C sugar
2 forks flour
Stir together flour and sugar
Put bottom pie crust in a pie pan and cut the top pie crust into strips.
¼ C of the flour and sugar is put in bottom of pie pan on crust. Put thawed strawberries on top of sugar and pie crust. Pour remaining sugar and flour on top of strawberries. Add 4 pats of butter on top of sugar/flour mixture.
Wet edge of pie crust and criss-cross top crust (forming a lattice pie crust top). Sprinkle top crust with sugar.
Bake at 400o for 15 minutes then turn down to 350o for 20 minutes. Enjoy!
A Bottle of Wine
Sally was driving home from one of her business trips in Northern Arizona when
she saw an elderly Navajo woman walking on the side of the road. As the trip
was a long and quiet one, she stopped the car and asked the Navajo woman if
she would like a ride. With a silent nod of thanks, the woman got into the
car.
Resuming the journey, Sally tried in vain to make a bit of small talk with the
Navajo woman. The old woman just sat silently, looking intently at everything
she saw, studying every little detail, until she noticed a brown bag on the
seat next to Sally.
![]() |
'What in bag?' asked the old woman
Sally looked down at the brown bag and said, 'It's a bottle of wine. I got it for my husband.'
The Navajo woman was silent for another moment or two.
Then speaking with the quiet wisdom of an elder, she said:
'Good trade.'
