If Candlemas [February 2] be mild and gay,
                                                              Go saddle your horses and buy them hay;
But if Candlemas be stormy and black,
It carries the winter away on its back.

Denver Market Unveils New Trends
As promised, here’s an update from our trip to the Denver Western Market. It was exciting to see all the new western items for 2008. It was encouraging to see all the retailers buying heavily while the media was predicting doom and gloom and recession. The “Western Lifestyle” is stronger than ever. We were glad to see the legacy western manufacturers, who went a little mainstream for a while trying to break into the crossover market, come back to their western roots. I am thankful every day for RFD TV’s equine shows, horse expos (like KS EquiFest), and clinicians who are educating, showcasing and bringing an understanding and awareness of the horse and western lifestyle. I’ll get off my soap box now. I’m sounding like Dewayne talking politics! Thanks for listening. Here’s a highlight of what to expect to see in western stores:

Colors for Causes:
1. “Tough Enough To Wear Pink” –Wrangler and Montana Silversmiths have partnered with the “Tough Enough To Wear Pink” organization and have raised over $4 Million dollars by donating a portion of each sale of their designated products back to help find a cure for breast cancer. Look for a “Tough Enough To Wear Pink” event to be included in all equine events. “Tough Enough To Wear Pink’s” new chocolate tee shirts, titled, “Cowgirl Sisterhood”, features what you think is a longhorn steer head on the front, but instead of a head in between the horns, is a pair of pink lips! It is a must have! It comes with a matching cap.

2. “RED” is the new hot color for 2008. Like the Breast Cancer Awareness campaign, the Heart Association is having “Wear Red” events. Red is everywhere – shirts, boots, vests, coats, and on tack. You’ll be seeing red in a “good” way in 2008.

3. “GREEN” for the environment – everything is going green! Watch out – it’s coming. My favorite “green” product is “Equine Fresh”, http://www.planetwiseproducts.com/equine.htm, a natural pine pellet horse bedding that has super moisture control, dust free, reduces the ammonia odor and lasts lots longer than regular shavings. I especially like it in the horse trailer as it stays on the floor and isn’t dusty. Heritage Tractor in Topeka, KS carries Equine Fresh – just ask for JD.

Other Colors to watch for: Navy is the new chocolate. Metallic is back – silver, gold, copper! Watch for silver and gold vests this fall! Now won’t they stand out in the arena! You will see a lot of lurex, a shiny silver stripe, in shirts and blouses. Very subtle. Steel blue grey is used as a background color in a lot of plaids with browns and reds. Ariat is featuring in their western apparel line for August – September, pinks, browns, light blues. For October – November, reds, navy, and light blues.

Camo – In pink and traditional green – it is everywhere! Purses to tack! From little girl pink camo apparel to big girl pink camo top Ariat boots!

Trends: – Butterflies - Skulls - Maltese Crosses – Fleur de Lis - on apparel, boots, jackets, jewelry, belt buckles, - everywhere! I’m getting old and for the life of me, I just don’t get it, but the younger western set loves the look!

Ladies Wide Belts
Worn on top of your jeans (over the too small belt loops), or on the outside of a blouse, dress or jacket. I think the jeans makers and the belt makers are in cahoots so we have to buy another width of belt! The cowhide wide contoured belts were exquisite! Look for conchos and less bling as embellishments.

Patent Leather Boots!
Patent leather is back in boots and handbags in all colors. Look for a new Ariat Fat Baby in black patent leather later this summer.

Andrea Fappani Bit Collection
Reiners - Andrea Fappani, www.fappaniperformance.com, the first European to join the NRHA million dollar rider club, has just introduced a new Performance Horse Bit Collection consisting of 14 bits priced $80 to $100. This collection includes several different mouthpieces and shank styles for training or in the show pen. He has two DVD’s as well that we have at the store. Come touch and feel the quality of these bits – your horse will like them.

What’s New in Tack for 2008?
Tack has gone “punchy” inside and outside the show arena! Punchy is the traditional, functional look of the “true” cowboy. Higher quality, professionally designed and endorsed tack offerings are now available.

Stars, dots and “spur rowels” are everywhere on tack! Look for them on the brow bands of bridles and across the front of breast collars. Bigger bridle cheek pieces and reins decorated with dots & stars. Camo is everywhere on tack – saddle seats to head stalls with camo brow bands decorated with shot gun shells – Yee Haw!

The cutters are wearing traditional “punchy” chaps. Chinks are a must have – functional and good looking. Chinks are offered with buckles, snaps or step in styles with conchos and different trimmings and made out of Elk, Buffalo, hair-on, and traditional tanned leathers with an assortment of tooling patterns.

Barrel racers are still loving the bling and the bigger the better. Saddle Leathers are going darker – more mahogany or chocolate rather than the natural tan.

Accessory pieces such as hay bags, totes, overreach boots and rope bags have gone camo, pink floral, red bandana, and black and white polka dots – fun, new looks!

What’s Cooking? - At Roy Frey Western Lifestyles
This delightful soup recipe comes from my Extreme Friend, Chris Mensch, Foxeye Ranch, Lawrence (who was recently featured on the Pinto Horse Magazine cover riding Stewart in the Extreme Cowboy Race). It was wonderful with a veggie platter, rye bread and pie for desert. Save this recipe for summer time when you have fresh squash from your garden!

CALABACITAS CHEESE SOUP (MEXICAN SQUASH SOUP)

Sauté diced onion, garlic, oregano, cumin (Comino), and pepper in olive oil and butter (use amounts to your liking)
Add:
2 cans of Rotel diced Mexican style tomatoes with peppers
1 can of drained corn
2-3 cups of chicken broth
Cut in chunks 2 each zucchini and yellow (crookneck, hook, patty pan, or whatever squash you have). Don’t slice them too thin or they get too soft.
Add to the boiling tomato mixture and cook about 10-15 minutes
Drop to simmer, add a box of cubed Velveeta (don’t bother trying to use “good” cheese, it will clump up)
Throw in clipped cilantro if you like, or parsley if you don’t

Simmer till melted, serve with good bread. Invite me. Extra good with cold beer.
