Volume 3, Number 1
Hello, Friends!
I hope that all of you have made it through the Holidays in great shape. I really enjoyed the holidays with all of the family and getting to know our 9-month-old granddaughter, Emma.
The 2007 New Year has started out great! I found out we have another grandchild coming, my first grandson in May! Another positive is that my son’s cat, Spunky, made it home after taking a trip in a friend’s back of the pickup and jumping out. The cat made it home in two days and everyone was happy! Also, I am doing a job of keeping with my New Year’s resolution and that is: Don’t get on the bathroom scales until I can move my belt notch back a hole. I am not quite ready to get on the scales.
While doing this I am in the process of getting our Stallion Edition Ready for our Better Horses Publication. If you have anything you might want to advertise, the deadline is this Friday, Jan.12th. If you are interested in putting an ad in, call Connie at 785/242-8555 or me at 785/418-6047. I am going to send out the paper one more time to everyone on our list which is about 22,000 horse owners. After that, only the paid subscribers will get it mailed and everyone else will have to pick up their free copy from their participating Purina Dealer. Anyone that has already paid and subscribed will get their 5 publications mailed beginning with the Spring Edition.
Make sure you plan to attend our 4th Annual Horseman’s Priority Clinic on Feb.3 & 4th at the Kansas Expo Centre in Topeka. See all the details in the calendar. It will be a great opportunity to get together to fellowship, learn about horses, and ride your horses if you want to bring them. Not mentioned in the ad but coming is Western Music Entertainer of the Year, Eli Barsii. Also, it is going to be great to have Western Music singer, Delbert Shields and Cowboy Poet, Geff Dawson. There is a special rate of $89 at Capitol Plaza hotel so make sure you tell them you are with the Horsesman’s Priority Clinic. I hope you plan to attend.
Some more exciting news is that “Better Horses Radio” will be taking their show to HorseFest in Springfield, MO on March 9,10th, & 11th. I hope that you folks plan to attend and stop by and see us at the Purina booth.
I look forward to seeing all of you this year. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with me if I can be of any help.
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Friend Needs A Horse!
I received a call from Kim Nunn who lives in the Lonejack, MO area.
Her daughter lost her 21-year-old horse to colic and is looking for a new
horse. She needs a good broke horse that can be used on trails and
general riding. If any of you have one that might fit the bill, please
give Kim
a call at (816) 537-7519 or (816) 718-3413. Maybe we can help this little
girl start the new year out right with a new horse.

Horse Management Tip
Turning Them Loose
By Dawn Dawson
How many of you have ever turned your horse out for exercise when they are a little fresh and nearly got kicked—or maybe did get kicked. In the winter, our horses feel super good because when it’s in the 30-50 degree temperatures—they love it. When they are turned out for exercise—they cannot hardly wait to get loose and run, buck and kick. Some horses leave the gate kicking up their heels and then run and when you go to the gate and release them—you are in firing range! The following is a simple safety tip that will keep you safer and your horse minding his manners in the process:
When you
lead your horse to the turnout paddock or pasture, allow them to walk through
the gate and then turn
back around
and “face” you while they remain on the lead line. No matter how anxious they
may be—ask them
to stand
there quietly for a minute or two and relax. Then, remove the halter and exit
the pen.
Our horses love the exercise and play time but take the time to make it safe for both of you.
Ride safely,
Dawn Dawson

Horsey Treat Recipe
"I Didn't Buck Today" Treats
2 sticks butter or margarine
¾ cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 cup raisins
2 cups rolled oats or oatmeal
1 cup alfalfa pellets (the little ones that are cylindrical and about a
½" long--not the pressed squares)
Mix butter with sugar and eggs until smooth. Add dry ingredients slowly.
Drop by spoonfuls onto cookie sheet -- bake for about 8 minutes at 350o.
These have a tendency to go very quickly at horse shows! The horses love
them!
