Volume 2, Number 24

Hello, Friends!

I hope all of you had a good weekend and are enjoying this Holiday Season. We had a great turnout at the “Swimming Hole” Open House at Brad and Amy Lund’s training facility near LaCygne, KS. The Aquatred Therapy unit they have available will prove to be a tremendous asset to the Equine Community. Over 200 folks attended this fine event.

It is great to have Luke, one of the twins, home this weekend for Christmas from Quantico, Virginia. With Christmas being a week away, I really need to pace myself on the food. The sweets and chocolates are my weakness and my jeans are feeling like Connie washed them in hot water and put them in the dryer.

I hope you all had the opportunity to see the NCHA Futurity Finals on RFD TV on Sunday evening. What a finish!  It looked as though the Champion was not going to be decided until the last horse went. Switching the TV back and forth between the Chiefs game and the cutting futurity was somewhat annoying, but it didn’t take long for the Chiefs to make it easy to stay with the Futurity.

I hope you make plans to attend our Priority Horseman’s Conference in Topeka. Details are in the calendar.

I have had several comments about the price of feed taking a huge jump. This past few weeks we have seen a tremendous jump in grain and ingredient prices. Feed everywhere has taken an increase. Along with our top of the line value-added products like Strategy and Ultium having increased in price, so have the lower ended products with the lower calories and nutrients. When it all settles out, it still is about cost/head/day and the overall performance and health of your horse. With prices where they are, it is more important than ever to feed the right amounts of the right diets to your horses. Products like Strategy, Omolene, Ultium, Nature Essentials-Born To Win, and Horseman’s Edge will still deliver the right nutrition at still a competitive price.

I want to thank all of you for all you have done. If there is anyway I can be of a help don’t ever hesitate to get a hold of me. I consider myself your ambassador or lobbyist to represent you and your needs to Purina.

I want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!  Let us always remember what Christmas is really about and that is the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Enjoy your family and friends.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

Nervous Riders Can Make Nervous Horses
by Sally Dwyer
Nervous riders are usually just passengers on horseback. They lack control, are fearful, and are a danger to
themselves and their horses. Since the horse was trained to believe what the rider tells him, he soon gets worried
when the rider starts steering to avoid things. If the rider should go around a puddle on the trail, the horse could
be thinking that there must be a reason for avoiding the puddle, maybe a shark lives in there. If the rider is worried
about the puddle, then surely the horse should be super worried.
If you are nervous, your body gives off a “Fear Chemical” and you are signaling to the horse that you don’t have much
control. The horse realizes that you are not his leader in this partnership and he starts testing his boundaries. You
then become more afraid and start giving in to him letting him assume the role of the leader. Then, at that puddle he
becomes afraid, because he darn well knows you are; and the puddle, along with many other things, becomes a major fear
for both of you.

Horsey Treat Recipe

Crunchy Horse Christmas Cookies

2 cups oats (whole, crimped or even oatmeal)
2 cups crushed corn
2 cups alfalfa pellets (ground up in food mill or processor)
1 cup corn oil
1 cup bran (cereal works fine)
